The “Red Dress Project” focuses on bringing domestic violence awareness to the community by hanging seven red dresses at an assortment of locations throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.
The victims include a 19-year-old woman who was killed by her abuser in June of last year after leaving the Santa Clarita Valley’s Domestic Violence Center’s shelter.
The City of Santa Clarita, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley have joined the Zonta Club of Santa Clarita to bring awareness for this campaign.
“I think the reason the ‘Red Dress Project’ has been so successful is because it’s a visual display,” said Adele Macpherson, chair of the “Red Dress Project” for the Zonta Club of Santa Clarita. “The dresses represent women that have died in Santa Clarita Valley, and hanging the dresses in the trees represent them dancing when the wind blows.”

The confirmed locations for the dresses include: Santa Clarita Valley Courthouse; Main Street in Old Town Newhall — outside of the KHTS AM-1220 station; College of the Canyons at the Honor Grove; the Metrolink station in Newhall; and at SAVIA Community Center of the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley. More locations and times are to come.
“The color red represents good and bad, love and violence,” said Macpherson. “The combination of the two represents a very powerful message and we would love for people to stop and ask questions and receive the educational cards that we will be passing out.”
This campaign is an educational piece for the community and encourages residents to speak up and say something when they see domestic violence, according to officials.
