Santa Clarita Idol – Week Two

Despite sweltering temperatures, the crowd gathered at Panera Bread on McBean Pkwy, for the 2nd show in as many weeks. In search of the Santa Clarita Idol, local radio station KHTS began hyping the show early in the day, inviting would-be singers to enter the competition. There were eight contenders, and like last week, all but one were female. The spectrum was broad, ranging from middle school students to prominent local professionals.

MC Lee Cadena kept the audience in stitches, bantering back and forth with judges and schmoozing with the crowd. His quick wit was matched by that of judge and co-owner of Panera Bread, Robert Ancill, who was prepared this week for Lee’s remarks with humor of his own. New to the team this week was KHTS Morning show host John Summers. The only female judge, station manager Sharon Bronson gave mostly constructive criticism to the contestants, acknowledging their courage to get on stage in front of a crowd and sing. And sing their hearts out they did.

Popular Santa Clarita confectioner Jill Jackson and her husband Scott didn’t hesitate to take up the challenge upon their arrival to the event. The hardest part for Jill was picking the right song. When her turn came to sing, she sauntered up to the stage brandishing her signature smile, and giving the performance her all. Asked if she had ever taken voice lessons, Ms. Jackson replied that her training came from singing in the shower. Following close behind was Dr. Saint Adeogba, a SCV Naturologist who educates the public about living healthy lifestyles. As her son Baba and Fiancé Brian stood by, Dr. Saint as she is known, lit up the night with her rendition of Cher (Believe). Three of the hopefuls were contenders from the first show; one of whom, Kelly Boardman, age 14, took the competition and was declared the winner of the evening. Last week’s winner Brant Goodwin was not present.

Excitement continues to build as the community anticipates week number three. Who next will surprise us with a display of their talent? We’ll have to wait and see. The Santa Clarita Idol competition will be held at Panera Bread, Thursdays at 7:00 pm throughout the summer. Registration begins at 6:00pm. The winner will sing at the city’s final Concert In The Park in August.
