Santa Clarita Public Library officials invite community members to participate in a series of events to celebrate the movie release of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”

“The Hobbit”-themed events will begin Nov. 25 and continue through Dec. 14 and will vary between the three branches of the library.
“The Hobbit” Library Activities:
Nov. 25 through Dec. 9 – Library goers are encouraged to test their luck by guessing the total number of Smaug’s gold coins. This event will take place at all three Santa Clarita Public Library branches (Canyon County, Old Town Newhall and Valencia). Winners of the activity will receive a pair of tickets to a Dec. 14 private screening of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”
Nov. 30 – There will be a free screening of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” at the Valencia Library branch from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Dec. 3 – There will be a free screening of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” at the Old Town Newhall Library branch from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Dec. 3 – Cliff Broadway, scholar of the book’s author J.R.R. Tolkien, will have a presentation about the “publishing history of Tolkien’s works” with a discussion to follow. This event will be held at the Valencia Library branch and will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Dec. 5 – Professor Josh Long of Azusa Pacific University will present his exploration of the character Smaug and his “draconic influence” on Tolkien’s series. The presentation will touch upon both “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” books. This event will take place at the Old Town Newhall Library branch and will start at 7 p.m.
Immediately following each event, community members will have the chance to win a free pair of tickets to a private screening of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”
The private film screening event will be held Dec. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Valencia Edwards Stadium 12 theater.
To be eligible for the grand prize screening tickets, community members must participate in at least one “The Hobbit”-themed library activity, have a Santa Clarita Public Library card and be at least 13 years old.
All “The Hobbit” library events are free and open to the public.
