“Events get them (Santa Clarita residents) in touch with the library and a chance to see that we’re more than just providing books,” said Marie Risis, adult services librarian at the Old Town Newhall Library. “We have different programs that are available for all ages, and we also have e-books and e-audio books that people can download onto any device.”

In addition, all three library branches will celebrate National Library Week by featuring special displays and interactive activities following the theme, “Lives Change at Your Library,” from April 13 to 19, according to the news release.

Attendees are invited to celebrate libraries by telling their story of how the library has made a powerful and positive impact on their daily lives, event officials said.

“Anything that’s fun that draws families in so they can see the other resources we offer (is important),” said Shannon Lane, children’s librarian at the Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy Library. “It’s a good way to build relationships with the community that might not come in otherwise, as well as provide cultural events for patrons that do already come in.”

Dia De Los Ninos at the Canyon Country Library

Dia De Los Ninos, or Children’s Book Day, encourages families to celebrate culture and heritage through reading at the Canyon Country Library branch, event officials said. The event features musical performances, an art workshop and storytime with renowned storyteller Michael McCarty. Each child who attends will also take home a free book.

Dia De Los Ninos is scheduled from 12 to 3 p.m. on April 5 at the Canyon Country Library on Soledad Canyon Road.

Email 101 and Cowboy Cooking at the Old Town Newhall Library

Email 101 invites adults to learn the basic of emailing, including how to set up an account and how to stay connected with family and friends online, event officials said.

The free event is scheduled from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on April 14 at the Old Town Newhall Library on Main Street.

Cowboy Cooking features demonstrations by a Santa Clarita chef that highlight a western themed menu in honor of the Cowboy festivities taking place in Santa Clarita throughout the month of April, event officials said. Attendees are required to register in advance online, and spots usually fill up quickly, Risis said.

Magazines, papers, textbooks or items in poor condition will not be accepted, and any items not exchanged will be donated to the Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library bookstore.

The Spring Cleaning Swap is scheduled from 1-4 p.m. on April 26 at the Valencia Library on Valencia Boulevard.
