the railroad tracks. (You can only turn one direction on 13th.) Take the first left,
which is 12th St., across from JMG Motorcycle. Take the next left, which is Hacienda
(do not turn on the hard left, Alderbrook) Take the next left, Oak Orchard Rd.
Make an immediate right onto Horseshoe Lane. Horseshoe turns into Palomino.
We are at the end of the cul-de-sac on the right side.
The Miladins have a 1/2-acre property in the Placerita Canyon area of Newhall,
and grow more than 120 roses of all types including hybrid teas, shrubs and old
garden roses. The large backyard has a southwest flavor and the roses are
thoughtfully blended with cactus and succulents. Some of the roses you will see
at Suzanne’s are the dark red floribunda Lavaglut, The Impressionist (a climber
from Heirloom Roses), Eden (a pink climber), and Golden Celebration
(an awesome David Austin English shrub that has intensely fragrant golden yellow
blooms). She also has a collection of antique roses such as Paul Neyron and Ulrich
Brunner Fils, and enjoys the Romantica rose Jean Giono with its huge yellow blooms.
Suzanne’s property came with an eyesore, a drainage ditch along one fence line.
She planted climbing roses along the fence and the long canes hang over the ditch
to hide it completely and still allow for the flow of water, another example in which
the rose is uniquely qualified to solve a landscape problem.
Garden of George & Karen T.S. Gubert
12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
22374 Homestead Place, Saugus, CA 91350
(661) 297-6881, gubers@socal.rr.com

Bouquet Canyon Rd. at Valencia Blvd. and Soledad Canyon Road. Continue on
Bouquet another two miles, then turn left onto Seco Canyon Road. Turn right onto
Copperhill, then right onto Paragon, then right onto Homestead Place. Karen’s place
is at the end of the cul-de-sac.
Karen has a fairly new garden of just a year old. However, during the past year her
garden has evolved considerably. She has several hundred roses, which include an
awesome collection of antique roses, shrubs, and polyanthas. Additionally, she also
has many miniatures, floribundas and a few hybrid teas and climbers. She has also
installed several arches and obelisks where roses will eventually grow over them.
Some of Karen’s favorite roses include her collection of modern shrubs Ambridge
Rose, Perdita, Be-Bop, and Molineux.  She has one of the largest collections of
polyanthas (27 varieties) in the Santa Clarita Valley. Her favorites are Mothersday
and Gabrielle Privat. Karen also collects single-petalled roses some of which include
Dainty Bess, Mutablis, Happenstance, Mrs. Oakley Fisher, and Kitty’s own light
pink sport of Playgirl named after her granddaughter Puanani. Some of the more
unusual roses in Karen’s collection feature some roses with unique colors like
Distant Drums, George Burns, Betty Boop, Carrot Top, and Monsieur Tiller.
