SCV Buzz – Family Fun Activities In Santa Clarita – August 19, 2014

So, SCV families, are you back in a routine yet? It can be a little challenging to get in the school and work groove after a summer of crazy fun. This weekend might be a great time to do something local with your kids and reconnect in the midst of the craziness.

Here are my top 5 picks of family-fun events in Santa Clarita this weekend:

Youth Sports & Healthy Families FestivalSCV Buzz - Family Fun Activities In Santa Clarita - August 19, 2014

It’s always difficult to get your kids the exercise they need, let alone the high level negotiating it takes to put a vegetable in your kids mouth. So a free event that will spark your child’s interest in sports and healthy eating?

Um, YES PLEASE! The Youth Sports & Healthy Families Festival is back on Saturday, August 23rd, from 10-5 at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex, and this year there are even more ways to play, swim, explore, and enjoy.

There is even a tricycle course. For grown-ups. Take THAT Newhall pass at rush hour!

Valencia Marketplace’s Kids Club

You know those lists, right? The ones from your child’s class that needs stuff like glue sticks, paper, and something totally exotic like “double sided tape with purple ducks embossed in gold” that you now must go try and find, for the second time?

Well, here’s a way to go shopping and have some fun too: the Valencia Marketplace’s Kids Club Back to School Day! It’s from noon to 3 on Saturday, August 23rd at the Marketplace Amphitheater behind Noah’s Bagels, and your kids can dance, do crafts, climb on an antique fire truck, and even make balloon animals.

Plus there are tons of shops there with everything you and your child’s teacher could possibly need. Even the purple ducks.

Movies at Hart Park

Somewhere over the rainbow…there is a free showing of the classic movie “The Wizard of Oz”. Don’t panic, it’s not that far…just at Hart Park. The movie is playing   Friday, August 22nd, starting at 7pm and you can get the specifics here.

Bring something to sit on, your picnic, and enjoy the movie that every single person in the world likes. Seriously, name me one person that doesn’t like that movie. You can’t, can you?

Rancho Camulos Museum – “Ramblings at the Rancho”

There’s a cool talk being given this weekend that you may want to take your older kids to see. It’s part of the  “Ramblings at the Rancho” series, and the theme is “Santa Clarita, Then and Now” discussing the rich history of the Santa Clarita Valley.

Rancho Camulos Museum is in Piru, only 20 minutes away from Santa Clarita and is a unique place to visit to inspire your kids to learn the history of the area. It’s at noon on Saturday August 23rd and is a $5 suggested donation. You can also take a tour and then hang out and enjoy a picnic lunch in this California Historic Landmark.

Family Fun Games to play at the house

All parents get pretty tired by the end of the day. Generally at the time the kids are just getting revved up. So, I came across an article that has fun games to play when you are feeling tired and it made me giggle, as well as giving me some great ideas.

Here are a few ideas:

T-shirt road map: Put on a cheap tee and have your kids draw a road on the back of it, then drive toy cars on it while you lay on your tummy.

Mom is queen: You are the queen on the throne and the kids bring you fake tea, slippers, etc. I like this one the best, for obvious reasons.

What’s on Mommy’s back?: They put toys on your back while you lie down with your eyes shut and guess what they are.

Hilarious and useful. Visit this article for more ideas.
