SCV Buzz – Family Fun Activities In Santa Clarita – February 18, 2015

February is the shortest month of the year, which means you had better pack all the Santa Clarita family fun you can find into it!

Here are my top 5 picks for Family Fun in Santa Clarita this weekend:

The Santa Clarita Philharmonic Orchestra Free Concert and Musical Instrument Petting Zoo

SCV Buzz - February 18Want to expose your kid’s ears to orchestral music without exposing your ears to an overabundance of whining and complaining? The Santa Clarita Philharmonic Orchestra has got the perfect solution for you, a concert with a Musical Instrument Petting Zoo.

Sunday, February 22, 2015 at 2:00 pm, take your kids to the Hart High School Auditorium where they can touch, feel and ask questions about orchestra instruments. Then at 3pm there is a free Pops concert so they can watch the instruments they just learned about in action. Visit their website for details.

They just may be inspired to put down the iPad and pick up a wind instrument!

Friday Night Lights Family Dance

SCV Buzz - February 18Does the mention of a “Dance” bring back memories of awkwardly slow dancing with extended arms to some song by Journey or Tears for Fears? Time to update your groove with the Friday Night Lights Family Dance at the Newhall Community Center.

Put your dancing shoes on and step out on Friday, February 20 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm for an evening of music, dancing, and camaraderie. The event is free and open to all ages.

Make new “Dance” memories by teaching your kids to dance with you, and dancing with your mate to a song written in this century.

Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration

SCV Buzz - February 18It’s the Year of the Sheep, and that means time to celebrate with a Chinese New Year “baaaa-sh”!

The Valencia Library is holding their event on Sunday, February 22nd from 1-4pm and families can celebrate with free entertainment, including lion dancers, traditional Chinese musicians and storytelling, performances by the SCV Chinese School, crafts, a Chinese fusion food truck and much more. Visit Santaclaritalibrary.com for more info.

The Year of the Sheep should be a great one! I have a warm, fuzzy, and slightly scratchy feeling about it.

Happenin’s at Hart: Exhibit Curation

SCV Buzz - February 18Friday afternoons are a great time to do something with your K-5th grader that is purely fun and doesn’t have anything to do with the demands of their school week.

Happenin’s at Hart has a program this Friday, February 20th from 3:30-4:30 pm that will lead the children in the steps of exhibit curation by having them decide the story, objects, and arrangement of their own exhibit. It’s free and you can find the details here.

Who knows, it might lead to curating exhibits at home. And THAT is only a few steps away from actually having them organize something!

Winter Weather and Bird Behavior

SCV Buzz - February 18So our winter is a little…summery. But the birds still follow the seasons and there is a cool program at Ed Davis Park in Towsley Canyon that will walk you and your kids through their behavioral changes.

Meet at Towsley Canyon’s front parking lot on Saturday, February 21st at 8:00am for this free two hour guided bird walk. You don’t have to be a bird expert to enjoy, just grab a pair of binoculars for you and the kids and head on over. Details can be found here.

Birds do act differently in the winter, which begs the same question about your kids…
