SCV Buzz – Family Fun Activities In Santa Clarita – November 5, 2014

Hey Santa Clarita families, it’s almost the weekend! Well, the weekend plus an extra day off for Veterans Day. But there’s a Monday in there so really it’s a weekend plus one day with another weird full day stuck in the middle…oh forget it. Just do some fun stuff with your kids, ok?

Here are my top 5 picks for local Santa Clarita family fun activities this weekend:

Star Party College of the Canyons

In the Santa Clarita area, you can see a fair amount of stars of the movie variety. But how about taking your kids to see stars that will shine for more than 15 minutes?

SCV Buzz-Veterans DayThe College of the Canyons is having their 10th Star Party and it’s going to be an amazing event. It’s on Friday, November 7th from 7:30-9:30pm at the Carl A Rasmussen Amphitheater on the Canyon Country Campus. Bring blankets and chairs to gaze at stars through telescopes, participate in hands-on activities, and be amazed by “out of this world” demonstrations. You can get more information here.

What happens if you see a movie star at the star party? I don’t think it will create a rip in the time/space continuum, but don’t quote me on that.

Saugus Train Station Tour

Kids love trains. This is not a fact up for debate, they just do. So why not take them someplace fun and close by that doesn’t involve Thomas and his annoying theme song? The Saugus Train Station Museum is open weekends from 1-4 at the Saugus Train Station at Heritage Junction and your kids will love to step back in time to the glory years of the locomotive. You will also get a great history lesson about the area, plus the whole thing is free!

If you can’t make it this weekend, don’t fret. Like the Thomas theme song, the event repeats…and repeats…and repeats.

Light the Night Walk

SCV Buzz-Veterans DayCancer is awful, and hard to explain to your children, no doubt about it. It also affects most of us at some point or another, so as much as we want to shield our kids from something as scary as cancer, there’s also an opportunity for learning and inspiration at the Light the Night Walk.

You can join up with this deeply emotional and important event that fundraises for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on Saturday, November 8th, at 5pm at Bridgeport Park in Valencia. The event includes the luminous walk, food, music, and camaraderie all while raising funds and awareness for cancers of the blood. You can still donate, participate, or just join in the fun by clicking here.

Santa Clarita Top Things To Do

Living History Rancho Camulos

There is only one thing I like more than regular actors, it’s RE-ENACTORS!! So you can see my excitement over the Living History Day at the Rancho Camulos Museum! It’s November 8th from noon to 4 pm and it’s a free event that will share stories of Rancho Camulos’ past dating back to the mid 1800s.

Kids can also make adobe bricks, handmade tortillas, and do laundry the 19th century way. Plus there will be docents re-enacting the history in a way that will engage both you and your decidedly more modern children. You KNOW I’m loving that!

Veterans Day Ceremony

SCV Buzz-Veterans DayThe kids are off of school for Veterans Day, but you are not off of parental duties, so here’s an idea for the national holiday. Visit the Veterans Day Ceremony at the Veterans Historical Plaza in Old Town Newhall.

It will take place at 11 am on the 11th and will honor our military with a ceremony featuring musical performers, speakers, and changing of the Flags. Click here for details and for parking info.

Turn your day off into quality time together while teaching them how to honor our military in a respectful way.
