SCV Mayor’s Committee Hosting ‘Memory Loss, Aging And The Workplace’ Luncheon

The Santa Clarita Valley Mayor’s Committee for Employment of Individuals with Disabilities is hosting a luncheon on Thursday where keynote speakers will address the theme, Memory Loss, Aging and the Workplace.

Rachelle Dardeau, executive director of the SCV Senior Center, and Susan Chapman Howland, director of education at the Alzheimer’s Association California Southland Chapter, will speak about how memory loss and aging can affect the daily lives of individuals and their families, according to a committee news release.

“Our mission as the Mayor’s Committee for Employment of Individuals with Disabilities is to promote the benefits of hiring persons with disabilities, and I realized there’s a lot more people that are choosing or having to stay in the workplace to an older age than previously,” said Ron Rudzinski, the committee’s chairperson. “So this whole issue of memory loss and issues surrounding that definitely can affect the workplace and can be something useful for the community.”

Dardeau has more than 25 years of experience in geriatric healthcare. She established the first regional office of the Alzheimer’s Association California Southland Chapter at California State University, Northridge, and was the association’s first director of regions.

In addition, Dardeau formerly worked as the program director of the Specialized Ambulatory Geriatric Evaluation program at Sherman Oaks Hospital, where she administered a 110-bed assisted living community exclusively for individuals with dementia. She also developed plans and operational guidelines for specialized senior services at Aging & Dementia Consultants, including geriatric assessment centers and dementia-specific residential care facilities.

Howland has more than 20 years of experience with community organizing around health care issues that focus on older adults. She is currently responsible for all educational programs and diversity efforts at the Alzheimer’s Association California Southland Chapter, and oversees numerous nationally-recognized programs serving older adults with dementia and their caregivers throughout Los Angeles county.

The SCV Mayor’s Committee has been holding luncheons with a variety of themes twice a year for approximately 20 years, Rudzinski said, and serves to not only offer information to the community but also to raise funds for the organization.

“We have a small scholarship fund where we fund four people that have a form of disability in training for or acquiring employment,” he said. “We’re trying to build that scholarship up so that they can serve people when they have a need.”

The committee is instrumental in placing special needs students following graduation from the William S. Hart Union School District, district officials said.

The luncheon is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday at the SCV Activities Center, located at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway in Santa Clarita. Cost of admission is $12, and includes lunch.
