Santa Clarita’s nationally ranked Team Handball club, TH Santa Clarita, will be playing an exhibition game against long time national power Los Angeles Team Handball on February 18th at the Staples Center after the LA Avengers arena football game against the Chicago Rush.
The two major LA area clubs will give a small exhibition at half time than play a full court game on the arena field. Handball is played on a 40 meter by 20 meter court just slightly shorter than the Arena Football’s 50 yard field. Although there is not as much contact as football, fans will be treated to a fast flying physical game. A combination of soccer and basketball, which has been described as water polo without the water. Team Handball features seven man teams passing and shooting a ball slightly smaller than a volleyball (about the size of a size three soccer ball) at six foot by ten foot goals. Each team has six court players and one goalie who can freely substitute like hockey. The sport features high scoring (teams usually score in the high twenties or low thirties), physical defense (defense is said to look a lot like football pass blocking) and lots of high flying action.
Anyone wanting to see the Avengers and some great team handball action can purchase tickets through TH Santa Clarita at their website www.thsantaclarita.com or can call 661-313-6348. Ticket are $21 dollars with part of the proceeds going back to support handball in Santa Clarita.
