City of Santa Clarita “Heroin Kills”
When:  Wednesday, August 28 from 6:30-8:30pm
Where:  Santa Clarita Activities Center, 20880 Center Pointe Parkway at Golden Valley Parkway
Details:  The City of Santa Clarita  is hosting its third  “Heroin Kills” symposium that address the issue of heroin and prescription drug abuse in the Santa Clarita Valley.  Learn about drug abuse, the tools to identify the signs of abuse, and how to keep our children safe. The evening will have two sections: program from 6:30-7:30pm and breakout session from 7:45-8:30pm.  The breakout session is a new aspect this year and will provide an interactive opportunity to focus on a specific area of interest.  This event is free and open to the public. Ice Station Valencia “The Carnival is Coming to Town”
When:  Friday, August 30; Saturday, August 31; Sunday, September 1; and Monday, September 2 (see times below)
Where:  Valencia High School Parking Lot – just across from Ice Station Valencia, 27745 N. Smyth Drive, Valencia
Details:  Grab your friends and family for carnival rides, games, raffles, food and fun right here in Santa Clarita, courtesy of Ice Station Valencia.   The Carnival will feature midway carnival rides, games, and concessions.  The Carnival hours for Friday, Saturday and Sunday are from noon-11pm.  Monday hours are noon-7pm.  Carnival Tickets can be purchased in advance for 50% off at the Ice Station Valencia Front Desk before Friday, August 30 at 12pm.  A pre-sale 10 pack of tickets will be available for $5.  After the carnival opens, all tickets must be purchased for retail price ($10 for 10 tickets).  A typical ride is between 3 and 5 tickets.  Get your tickets early and save big!  A portion of the proceeds will benefit youth hockey in Valencia.

Pine Mountain Club “Fall Festival”
When:  Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1 starting at 9am on both days
Where:  Pine Mountain Village Center, Frazier Park (see website for directions)
Details:  Pine Mountain Club has offered their “Fall Festival” for the last 38 years.   The festival has live music and entertainment, vendors, arts and crafts and, great food, wine and beer.  The kids will enjoy a giant bounce house, gigantic slide, a 4-man Euro-jump, and more.  There is even a Fall Festival Parade on Saturday at 11am.  Admission and parking is free.   The weather for the Labor Day weekend should be perfect for the Fall Festival.  The website has several hotel, cabins and rental listings if you decide to make a weekend out of the event.  More information is available by calling 661-242-2298 or 661-242-1996 or online.

Saving Grace Animal Sanctuary

Details:  Saving Grace Animal Sanctuary is holding a fundraiser to benefit their non-profit organization.  The fundraiser will be at Menchies in Canyon Country.  A portion of sales will be donated to Saving Grace Animal Sanctuary.  Mention the Animal Sanctuary when ordering.  Saving Grace is a non-profit organization that helps equine, goats, sheep and alpacas that need a home.  The animals have been neglected or no longer wanted by the owner.  More information about Saving Grace Animal Sanctuary is available online.

City of Santa Clarita “Let’s Go To The Beach!”
When:  Every Saturday and Sunday now through September 1
Where:  From Santa Clarita to Santa Monica Beach
Details:  Take your last chance of the summer to use the City of Santa Clarita “Let’s go to the beach!” program.  There are Santa Clarita Transit buses that go from four different locations around the valley. Ride to the beach with ease on the City’s comfortable, air-conditioned commuter express buses.  You can bring beach chairs, coolers and even surfboards.  You could make plans to spend Saturday night in Santa Monica then take the bus back the next day.  Bus fares are $3.00 each way for children and adults.  Seniors over age 60 and persons with disabilities pay $1.50 each way and persons with disabilities.  Exact cash or TAP cards only.  Persons under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult.  Unaccompanied minors must bring valid school ID to verify age.  For large group accommodations, please call at least five business days in advance.  More information on routes, pick-up location and more is available by calling 294-1BUS or online.

SCV Food Pantry Food Drive
When:  now through August
Where:  seven local city facilities and directly at the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry
Details: We are in the final days to participate in the City of Santa Clarita and the SCV Food Pantry partnership for their Fifth Annual Food Drive.  Items most needed: tuna, peanut butter, canned meats, fruit, canned tomatoes, dried soups, cereal, mac & cheese, shampoo, tooth paste, toothbrushes, deodorant, bar soap, diapers and feminine hygiene products.  Summer strains the resources of the Food Pantry with children being home from school.  The Food Pantry is located at 24133 Railroad Avenue in Newhall.  Non-perishable donations can be made from 9am to noon every Monday through Thursday.  Collection bins for non-perishable food donations have been set up at:  City Hall, the SC Sports Complex, the Transit Maintenance Facility, Central Park, Old Town Newhall Library, Valencia Library, and JoAnne Darcy Library in Canyon Country.  Read more in a story on the KTHS website.   

Academy Swim Club – Swim Lessons

Details:  Academy Swim Club has swim lessons for kids of all ages.  The kids learn in a heated pool while parents can watch from an air-conditioned viewing area.  Academy Swim Club has lessons available for small groups, semi-private or private for ages two weeks through adults.  There is ‘open’ swim practice time for all students.  All lessons are guaranteed.  Keep your kids safe around water by signing them up for swim lessons.  More information is available by calling 702-8585 or online.

Beat The Heat And Do A Last Blast Of Summer  With The Kids

1.) 3.) Rancho Camulos “Ramona Days”

Where: Rancho Camulos Museum and National Historic Landmark, 10 miles west on the 126 (from the I-5)
Details:  Ranch Camulos “where the history, myth and romance of Old California still lingers” is again holding “Ramona Days” to celebrate all things related to “Ramona”, the famous 19^th century Helen Hunt Jackson California novel.  Rancho Camulos is known as the Home of Ramona because it is the setting for the popular novel that expands on the Californio mission and rancho history. The 1910 silent movie “Ramona” starring Mary Pickford was in part filed at Rancho Camulos. Ramona Days celebrates with Ramona Play scene re-enactments, music, tours, traditional and Flamenco dancing, food and fun for everyone in the family.  Children have a wide variety of activities including face painting, crafts, citrus art, adobe brick making, tortilla making, steer roping, performance art and reading corner.  More information and tickets are available by calling 805-521-1501 or online.    

City of Santa Clarita “CERT – Community Emergency Response Training” – Register Now
When:  Saturday, September 7, 14 and 21 (this course is three Saturdays)

Details:  The City of Santa Clarita  is offering a “CERT – Community Emergency Response Training” course.  This is a nationally certified course designed to help families, neighborhoods, schools and businesses prepare for effective emergency disaster response through training and preplanning.  The course features fire suppression/utility control, light search and rescue, terrorism disaster preparedness, triage disaster medical operations, and team organization and management.  The materials fee is $30 per person.  Participants must be at least 18 years old.  Register by calling 661-250-3700 or online.   

Boy Scouts of America “Leaders of Character Recognition Dinner”
When:  Saturday, September 28 starting at 6pm 
Where:  Hyatt Regency Valencia, 24500 Town Center Drive at McBean Parkway in Valencia
Details:  The Hart District of Boy Scouts of America will hold their annual “Leaders of Character Recognition Dinner” to recognize honorees from the Santa Clarita Valley.  These honorees exemplify the Character, Values and Leadership espoused by the Boy Scout Oath and the Scout Law in their personal and public lives.  This year’s honorees are: Bob and Margo Hudson, Cary and Kirsten Quashen, and Fred and Kristen Arnold.  Arif Halaby, CEO of Total Financial Solutions in Newhall, started the event in 2006 when he was approached by a local Boy Scout troop that needed to raise money to buy equipment. Read more on the event in a story on the KHTS website. 

SCV Vietnam Wall 
When:  September 26 through September 29 – 24 hours a day
Where:  on Citrus Street side of the Westfield Valencia Town Center
Details:  Santa Clarita is poised to welcome the Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall.  This wall is the largest traveling replica of the actual Vietnam Memorial Wall. It is an 80% replica with 100% of the names of the victims from the Vietnam War. Local resident Chuck Morris plays a definitive part in bringing the wall to Santa Clarita.  Morris helps organize the annual Memorial Day parade with the Friendly Valley Veterans Squad in Friendly Valley.  He heard about the wall but inquiries made him realize that it was much too big for Friendly Valley parade purposes.  But he thought of three important reasons for the traveling wall to come to Santa Clarita.  As Morris says, “The first was for people who have relatives or people who have relatives on the wall and can’t afford to go to Washington, D.C., so they can see the wall,” Morris said.  “The second reason is what an amazing thing this will be for our city,” Morris said, noting that the SCV has one of the highest per capita veteran populations in the state. Finally, “It’s also about education, he said, noting that most schools don’t include the Vietnam War in their history lessons.”  Many opportunities have arisen with the coming of the wall: kids essay contest for grades 4-6, volunteers for a continuous reading of the wall names, and more.  Read more online. 

Valencia United Methodist Church “Community Block Party”
When:  Sunday, September 8  :30-7:30pm
Where:  Valencia United Methodist Church, 25718 McBean Parkway, Valencia – across from Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital
Details:  Valencia United Methodist Church is holding a “Community Block Party”.  The event is free and all are welcome.  This family-friendly event will have fun activities for all ages including a giant waterslide, rock climbing wall, carnival games, door prizes, pie-eating contest, free hot dogs (and other food), and live music.  Have the kids bring a towel for after the water fun.
