Grace Baptist “Summer Concert Series
When:  Sunday, July 14 at 6pm
Where:  Grace Baptist Church, 22833 Copper Hill Drive, on the corner of Copperhill and Seco
Details:  The 2013 Summer Concert Series at Grace Baptist Church  brings us “The Pearce Family Bluegrass Band”.  Bring your picnic blankets and lawn chairs for this free summer concert.  Enjoy traditional bluegrass, gospel bluegrass, and the Pearce Family’s own original “Newgrass” music.  The Summer Concert Series is great casual fun for the entire family.  The concerts are held outside in the amphitheater.  More information is available online.  

College of the Canyons “CareerCampSCV”

Where:  Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center at College of the Canyons Valencia campus, 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, Valencia
Details:  The College of the Canyons Career Center is again holding their CareerCampSCV, a free daylong event designed to help students and community members that are looking to build, enhance or start a new career.  The event includes guest speakers, ad-hoc presentations and interactive breakout sessions focused on the building and improving a professional career.  Participants must register in advance.  More information and registration are available online  More information is also available by calling the COCCareerCenter at 661-362-3286.

Patriots Luncheon
When:  Thursday, July 11 starting with check-in at 11:30am
Where:  Hyatt Regency Valencia, 24500 Town Center Drive (Town Center at McBean Parkway)
Details:  This year’s Patriots Luncheon presented by the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce honors SCV Veterans.  Portions of the event’s proceeds will further fund the Chamber’s Ian Gelig Scholarship Program.  The scholarship is named in honor of fallen Sgt. Ian T.D. Gelig, an Army paratrooper who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.  The scholarship is designed to honor all Santa Clarita Valley veterans by providing financial support to veterans and immediate family members who are pursuing higher education.  Tickets for the luncheon are $50 per person or $500 for a table of 10.  Information is availably by calling 661-702-6977 or by emailing info@scvchamber.com.  Register online.  

Boundaries Simulcast at NorthPark Community Church
When: Saturday, July 13, 2013 from 9am-12:30pm
Where: NorthParkCommunityChurch, 28310 Kelly Johnson Parkway (near Newhall Ranch Road & Copperhill)
Details:  NorthPark Community Church  will host a Boundaries Simulcast event featuring Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend.  This event is open to the community.  Dr. Cloud and Dr. Townsend wrote the best-selling book “Boundaries: When to Say YES, When to Say NO, To Take Control of Your Life”.  Learn how to take back control of your own life.  Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at    or on Sunday morning at NorthPark.  Tickets can be purchased at northpark.com or on Sunday mornings at NorthPark. NorthPark is the only location in town to see the Boundaries Simulcast and seating is limited.

Concerts In The Park
When:  Saturday, July 13 from 7-11pm
Where:  Central Park, 27150 Bouquet Canyon Road, Saugus
Details:  The City of Santa Clarita is bringing back the popular free concert series “Concerts In The Park”.   This weekend Poor Man’s Poison will perform.  Poor Man’s Poison has a special connection with KHTS AM-1220.  They entered last year’s Texaco Country Showdown sponsored by KHTS.  The Texaco Country Showdown is America’s largest Country music talent show.  Poor Man’s Poison won the local competition held at Concerts In The Park and went on to win the State Title and the Regional Final and became the winners of the National Final.  They won the Grand Prize of $100,000 and the title of “Best New Act in Country Music”.  They went on tour with Mumford & Sons.  And it all started at last year’s Concerts in the Park.  Read a story on their win on the KHTS website.    Saturday also bring this year’s top three contestants for Texaco Country Showdown in their final local competition before going on to the next level of competition.  The top three were selected from a field of seven  that competed at Keyboard Galleria Music Center. The top three have been spotlighted on KHTS: Marie Wise-Hawkins,  Bourbon County and Suzanne Harper.   Directions, rules of the park and more information are available online.  

Repertory East Playhouse “9-5: the Musical”
When:  July 12 through August 17 – Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, Sunday Matinees at 2pm
Where:  Repertory East Playhouse, 24266 Main Street, Old Town Newhall
Details:  The Repertory East Playhouse brings us “9-5: the Musical” based on the 1980s movie.  The book was written by Patricia Resnick.  Music and lyrics for the musical were written by Dolly Parton.  The show centers on the friendship of three women who work in the same large corporation. They are pushed over the edge by their sexist, egotistical, lying boss. “Working 9-5, what a way to make a living.”  More information and tickets are available by calling 288-0000 or online

SC Shakespeare Festival “SummerFest – Henry IV”
When:  Saturdays: July 13, 20, August 3;  Sundays: July 14, 21, August 4 – see details for Friday, July 12 for Opening Celebration
Where:  Rivendale at Towsley Canyon, 24255 The Old Road, Santa Clarita
Details:  Enjoy Shakespeare, music and/or theatre under the stars of Rivendale at Towsley Canyon all summer long.  Previous summers saw the Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival producing weekend performances.  This year they have expanded the festival to include other local groups.  The Festival is now called “L.A. SummerFest at Rivendale”.  The summer line up will include free and ticketed events:  Henry IV, Spare Tone-Smooth Jazz Under the Stars, Hair-The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, SCV Concert Band performing Billy Shakespeare vs. Billy Joel, and more.  First up is the free Shakespeare performance of Henry IV.  Donations will be accepted with great appreciation.  Bring chairs and/or blankets, picnics or snacks, and a sweater or jacket (the canyon cools after the sun goes down).  Wine will be available at all events.  On Friday, July 12 there will be a special Opening Celebration fundraiser which includes dinner, wine and Shakespeare in the park performances.  Ticket information is available online.  More information, directions and ticket information is available online.  

Pilates Teck “Osteo Pilates Workshop”
When: Saturday, July 13 from 2-3pm
Where:  Pilates Teck, 22800 Lyons Avenue, Suite 120, Newhall
Details:  Pilates Teck is holding a special “Osteo Pilates Workshop” where you can learn how to “create stronger bones, safer bones and better balance”.  Learn: the causes of osteoporosis, what creates the highest fracture risk situation, what lowers your fracture risk, what is the best nutrition for osteoporosis, why Pilates is a safe method for reducing your fracture risk, and safe exercises you can start doing at home.  The informational will be led by Karena Thek authored “OsteoPilates”.   Learn more and register online or by calling 661-260-1609.

Bridge To Home Fundraiser For Homeless Shelter & Homeless Vets

Where:  VFW, 16208 Sierra Highway, Canyon Country
Details:  Bridge to Home   is sponsoring a fundraiser at VWF to benefit our local homeless shelter and homeless vets.  Live music will be performed by Debra Lee & Trigger Happy.  There will be auctions, raffles and a bake sale.  Barbeque dinner tickets are $6 at the door.  

FastFrame Valencia “Artist Reception & Exhibit
When:  Saturday, July 13 from 1-4pm
Where:  FastFrame Valencia, 24204 Valencia Boulevard – in the Kohl’s/Whole Foods shopping center
Details:  Fast Frame Valencia is hosting an “Artist Reception & Exhibit” in their ongoing effort to bring art to the Santa Clarita Valley.  Featured artist Sarah Bukowsky specializes in intricate pet portraits and animal art.  The event is free and open to the public.  FastFrame is open Monday through Friday from 10am-6pm and Saturdays from 10am-5pm.

Summer Hair Fun With “Extensions of Love

Where:  Beyond The Fringe Salon, 23424 Lyons Avenue, Newhall

Golden Valley High School Goodwill Fundraiser

Where:  Golden Valley High School, 27051 Robert C. Lee Parkway, near the intersection of Sierra Highway and Golden Valley
Details:  Golden Valley High School Cheer would like us to support their cheerleaders by donating to a Goodwill Donation fundraiser.  Bring your no longer needed donations of clothing, shoes, accessories, blankets, books, CDs, DVDs and kitchen items to the fundraiser.  They are unable to accept large items such as furniture, appliances, exercise equipment, mattresses and such.

Summer Night Movies
When:  Friday, June 28 at 7pm
Where:  William S. Hart Regional Park, Hart Picnic Grounds, 24151 Newhall Avenue, Newhall
Details: Summer Night Movies are coming to Santa Clarita.  The first movie of the summer is “Madagascar 3 – Europe’s Most Wanted”.  Outdoor, fun-filled and free summer night movies come to us courtesy of L.A.County’s Department of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the Friends of Hart Park.  Before the movie there will be music, entertainment and games.  Bring your blankets and/or lawn chairs.  Unleashed animals, smoking and alcohol are prohibited.  Upcoming Movies:  Friday, July 12 “Ice Age 3–Dawn of the Dinosaurs”; Friday, July 26 “Tangled”; Friday, August 2 “How to Train Your Dragon”; Friday, August 16 “The Iron Giant”.

Santa Clarita Artists Association Summer Art Festival and Artists Reception

Details:  The Santa Clarita Artists Association is holding their 4th annual Summer Art Festival.  The Festival runs from July 9 through July 13 from 9am-6pm.  There will be more than 100 pieces of art on display.  The art festival is free and open to the public.  The Artist Reception will be held on July 13 from 4-7pm.  Light appetizers will be served along with a no-host bar.  There will also be live demonstrations.  More information is available by calling 312-3422 or online

 

City of Santa Clarita “Let’s Go To The Beach!”
When:  Every Saturday and Sunday now through September 1
Where:  From Santa Clarita to Santa MonicaBeach
Details:  The City of Santa Clarita has the “Let’s go to the beach!” program again this summer.  There are Santa Clarita Transit buses that go from four different locations around the valley. Ride to the beach with ease on the City’s comfortable, air-conditioned commuter express buses.  You can bring beach chairs, coolers and even surfboards.  You could make plans to spend Saturday night in Santa Monica then take the bus back the next day.  Bus fares are $3.00 each way for children and adults.  Seniors over age 60 and persons with disabilities pay $1.50 each way and persons with disabilities.  Exact cash or TAP cards only.  Persons under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult.  Unaccompanied minors must bring valid school ID to verify age.  For large group accommodations, please call at least five business days in advance.  More information on routes, pick-up location and more is available by calling 294-1BUS or online.
