Valencia Kia “Celebrates Armed Forces Day”
When:  Saturday, May 18 from 11am-3pm
Where:  Valencia Kia, 23901 Creekside, Valencia – in the Valencia Auto Mall
Details:  Valencia Kia is celebrating Armed Forces Day in a big way and KHTS will be there broadcasting.  Valencia Kia is offering rebates of up to $1,000 to active military and up to $500 rebates to all veterans that buy a Kia from Wednesday, May 15 through Sunday, May 19.  On every car sold (Wednesday through Sunday), Valencia Kia will donate $50 to Santa Clarita Child & Family Center and Habitat for Humanity for their innovative Veteran’s programs.  Enjoy free hot dogs and drinks.  KHTS will be giving away prizes.  The KHTS 1948 Mack Fire Truck will be there for your kids to climb on and have pictures taken.  Test drive a Kia and receive a free American flag. Habitat For Humanity “Women’s Empowerment Build”
When:  Saturday, May 18 from 9am-2pm
Where:  College of the Canyons Valencia Campus, Parking Lot 8, Valencia
Details:  Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita is holding the 2013 Women Empowerment Build (WE Build).  Local women will gather to build veteran homes.  The 2013 Chairwoman of the build is Cheri Fleming, owner of Valencia Acura and President-elect of Soroptomist International.  Female family members who are going to receive homes and female community members will come together to work towards a common goal of building for Humanity SF/SCV’s new Habitat for Heroes Veteran community here in Santa Clarita.  Registration includes a t-shirt and pink hard hat for each participant, continental breakfast, sponsor fair, safety briefing, building assignments, build, lunch and speakers, training and competitions.  Special this year will be the honoring of female veterans, widows of the fallen, and those who have persevered despite tragic losses incurred during wartime.  In addition to our speakers, there will be a special WWII Veteran who exemplifies women in the armed forces.  The event will be held off-site from where the homes are being built, but participants will be building elements of the neighborhood that will later go into the 87-home community here in Santa Clarita.  Read more on the WE build event on the KHTS website.  For more information and registration call 818-884-8808 or email bengh@HumanityCA.org.  More information and registration is also available online.  

Teen Life Leadership Training with Alex Urbina
When:  Day One:  Saturday, May 18 begins with registration at 9:30am, start at 10am and ends at 6pm; Day Two: Sunday, May 19 begins promptly at 10am and ends at 4:40pm

Details:  Teen Life Leadership Training with Alex Urbina is a life altering educational experience focused on self-awareness and leadership development for teens.  The workshop offers direct and powerful exercises where teens get to examine their own viewpoints and identify the self-limitations that get in the way of their maximum potential. Once identified, the students get multiple opportunities to break through some of the fears, doubts, and other insecurities that inhibit self-expression and the self-confidence they need to be living extraordinary lives.  For more information call 661-505-5021.

Real Life Church – “Savia Community Open House”
When:  Saturday, May 18 from 11am-3pm
Where:Savia, 23780 Newhall Avenue (formerly San Fernando Road – in space originally meant for Tresierras Supermarket – across from AV Party Rental)
Details:  As part of the Real Life Church community partnership, Savia Community opened its doors on May 5 and will be holding their “Open House” this weekend.  Savia will house three resident non-profits: A Light of Hope, Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita, and Single Mother’s Outreach.  Savia is a Spanish word that translates to energy, vitality or lifeblood.  Savia is a multi-use space with a 285-seat auditorium (for church services or community events), Wi-Fi lounge with work counters, a fireplace, open seating, four enclosed booth spaces, and more.  “Simply put, it will be one of the best public spaces in SCV to work, read or connect with a friend”.  The Open House will include a coffee and juice tasting from the , live music, kid’s crafts and more.  Read a KHTS story on Savia.  More information is also available by calling Real Life Church at 775-2041.     

California Strawberry Festival
When:  Saturday, May 18 from 10am-6:30pm and Sunday, May 19 from 10am-6:30pm
Where:  Strawberry Meadows of College Park, 3250 South Rose Avenue, Oxnard
Details:  The 30th Annual California Strawberry Festival plans to be the best festival ever.  The festival will be jam-packed with all your favorite strawberry indulgences at over 50 food booths.  There will be concert stages, Strawberryland For Kids with free rides and attractions, fine arts and crafts booths, games, contests and more.  KHTS is selling adult tickets at half price – $12 value, your cost $6.  Purchase tickets online or at our radio station studio at 27225  Camp Plenty Road, Suite 8, Canyon Country.  

REP “To Kill A Mockingbird”
When: May 10 through June 15; Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm; Sunday Matinees at 2pm

Details:  The spring production at Repertory East Playhouse is Harper Lee’s American classic “To Kill A Mockingbird”.  “Set in Alabama during the Great Depression, To Kill a Mockingbird follows the journey of Jem and Scout Finch, whose father has been appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man framed for a crime he didn’t commit.”  More information and tickets are available by calling 288-0000 or online

American Cancer Society “Relay For Life”
When:  Saturday, May 18 through Sunday morning, May 19
Where:  Central Park, 27150 Bouquet Canyon Road, Saugus
Details:  Get ready for the American Cancer Society’s heart-warming event Relay for Life.  It is an overnight community walk where teams take turns walking the track and supporters cheer on the teams. Relay for Life recognizes and celebrates those that are fighting cancer, those that have survived and those that have lost their battle.  The event also recognizes those who give time, love and support. The day includes food, games activities, entertainment and much needed informational booths.  The Opening Ceremony brings everyone together for a high-energy kick off at 10am followed by the Survivors Lap where cancer survivors take the first lap, celebrating their victory over cancer.  One of the most memorable parts of the event is the lighting of candles inside personalized bags the Luminaria Ceremony, which takes place after dark to remember those lost to cancer, honor those who have fought cancer in the past, and support those who continue the fight.  The Fight Back Ceremony symbolizes the emotional commitment to fight against cancer.  Read more about Relay For Life on the KHTS website.  Learn more or register by calling 298-0886, option 3 or online.  

Armed Forces Day “Care Packaging For Deployed SCV Troops”
When:  Saturday, May 18 from 9am-Noon
Where:  Newhall Library, 24500 Main Street, OldTown Newhall
Details:  On Armed Forces Day, join Prayer Angels for the Military, American Legion Post 507 and Hero Home Source LA in preparing care packages to be mailed to deployed troops from the Santa Clarita Valley.  The morning will start with a flag ceremony conducted by Santa Clarita Boy Scouts and a prayer for our heroes. All are welcome to stop in and sign the “Thank you for your service banner” which will be shipped with the packages, too.  Please make a donation of the following to add to the packages: Trail mix, jerky, chips, nuts, hard candy, gum, granola bars, protein bars, fruit roll ups, fruit snacks & individually wrapped cookies.  Cash donations are appreciated and will be used for postage.  RSVP on Facebook

Details:  The City of Santa Clarita is holding Santa Clarita’s 10th Annual Bike to Work Day Challenge.  Participants can enter into a raffle for prizes.  Bicycle pit stops will be stationed throughout the City for cyclist to enjoy free refreshment, gift certificates, movie tickets and more.  There is also a competition for businesses with participating employees.  Learn more and register online

Fast Frame Valencia “Congressional Art” Exhibit

Where:  Fast Frame Valencia, 24204 Valencia Boulevard, Valencia (in the Kohl’s/Whole Foods Center)
Details:  Fast Frame Valencia  is hosting the artwork submissions for the Congressional Art 2013 contest.  Artwork from high school students (grade 9-12) who are residents of the California 25th District have been accepted for the Congressional Art 2013 contest.  The winner, Michaela Jenkins of Palmdale, was selected on May 9.  Michaela Jenkins work will be put on display in the United States Congressional tunnel in Washington, D.C. for visitors to and members of Congress to enjoy.  Read a story about the contest is on the KHTS website.   Fast Frame Valencia welcomes our community to view the artwork. 

Arthritis Walk
When:  Sunday, May 19, registration at 7:30am
Where:  Six Flags Magic Mountain, 26101 Magic Mountain Parkway, Valencia
Details:The Arthritis Walk is the Arthritis Foundation’s signature event.  The event features a three-mile, one-mile course and Festival Zone.  The Foundation “helps prevent and treat this serious and painful disease through research, education and community programs”.  The Festival Zone runs from 7:30-11am.  Parking is free prior to 9am.  More information is available online

COC Dance “Spring Into Future-Dance 2022”
When:  Thursday, May 16 and Friday, May 17 at 8pm
Where:  Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at COC Valencia Campus, 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, Valencia

Antonovich “Trail Dusters Ride”
When:  Sunday, May 19, check-in at 7am
Where:  28515 San Francisquito Road, Santa Clarita
Details:  Los Angele County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and Los Angele County Department of Parks and Recreation are holding the Antonovich Trail Dusters Ride.  The ride follows the scenic trails of Cliffe Stone.  Cliffe Stone, a local resident, was an American country singer, musician, record producer, music publisher, and radio and TV personality.  In 1990, Stone was abducted into the Santa Clarita’s Walk of Western Stars which honors the legends of Western film, television and radio who have contributed to America’s heritage since 1900.  The “Trail Dusters Ride” is a 3-1/2 hour ride with two rest stops.  The trail is a combination of rolling hills, semi-steep hills, and level areas.The cost is $30 per person and does not include horse rental.  More information on the ride, horse rental and more is available by calling 909-599-8411 or in a story online on the KHTS website.

City of Santa Clarita “SENSES”
When:  Thursday, May 16 from 7-11pm
Where:  Main Street, Old Town Newhall
Details:  SENSES, a City of Santa Clarita event, is designed to heighten your sense of sight, smell, touch, taste and sound with live music and entertainment, art, food trucks, beer, wine and more.  Each month there will be a different theme to the evening and a constantly changing musical lineup.  This month’s theme is “Rock the Bike” featuring The Skinny Little Twits celebrates National Bike Month.  Main Street will transform into a big block party.  The event is open to all ages and is free.  Read a KHTS story on Thursdays in Old Town Newhall.  More information is available online.

St. Clare’s Bar-B-Que & Faire

Where:  St. Clare of Assisi on Calla Way, Canyon Country
Details:  St Clare’s is holding their annual Bar-B-Que Faire to bring the community together with food, fellowship and fun.  The Bar-B-Que is known for their variety of ethnic foods.  Enjoy the Spin Room, “A Senior Moment”, slide & jumper, live entertainment and games & prizes. 

Zonta “LifeForward Workshop”
When:  Saturday, May 18 from 10am-12:30pm
Where:  Desert Streams Church, 26873 Reuther Avenue, Canyon Country
Details:  Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley and Single Mother’s Outreach are holding a LifeForward Workshop “Divorce and Family Law Issues”.  The workshop is free and “designed for women who are underserved, in need, or at risk, the goal of the program is to foster economic independence and self-sufficiency”. Rancho Camulos “Spring Plein Air Artistist Day”

Thunder On The Lot
When:  Saturday, June 8 from 2-11pm and Sunday, June 9 from 10am-6pm
Where:  Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, 
Details:  This year marks the 19th year for Thunder On The Lot.  The event is a huge motorcycle show, custom/classic car show, low rider show, import car show, natural gas vehicles show, green energy exhibit, drifting races, and stunt farm/motorcycle stunt show.  There will be a carnival and over 100 vendors.  On Saturday, the main stage will feature MLC, Jason Scott, Judge Jackson and Great White.  The Car Show Stage will feature L’Insanity, Angeles Band, Jay Gordon & Blues Venom, and Bullfrogg Blues Band with special guest Mo Grundy.  You’ll have a chance at winning a brand new Harley Davidson bike, a $25,000 in-ground swimming pool and much more.  KHTS is selling tickets to Saturday’s Thunder On The Lot by coming into the station or online. Golden Valley High School Band “The International Sonora Show”
When:  Friday, May 31 at 7pm
Where:  Golden Valley High School, 27051 Robert C. Lee Parkway (near Golden Valley Parkway and Sierra Highway)
Details:  Golden Valley High School Band Boosters are hosting a benefit concert starring Kiko Vargas and The International Sonora Show with an orchestra of professional singers and musicians performing the popular dance music, Cumbia.  Kiko is a supporter of music education and is excited to promote multi-cultural music in Santa Clarita.  Kiko and his band will be performing with the Golden Valley High School band and members of the Hart District Honor Bands.  Proceeds benefit the Hart District Honor Bands.  Information and tickets are available online with KHTS or online with Golden ValleyHigh School band.

Details:  Register your students, entering seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth grades, for the popular career exploration CollegeSummer Institute.  The Summer Institute provides hands-on career exploration and learning opportunities in a variety of areas and subject including:  robotics, motion picture special effects, video game design, sports medicine, digital photography, architecture, welding and alternative energy fabrication.  More information is available online.  

Ice Station Valencia – Registration for Summer Camp

Details:  Ice Station Valencia has the Coolest Camp in Santa Clarita.  Kidtastic runs from June 17-August 9, Monday through Friday.  Kidtastic offers ice skating lessons, crafts and games.  Polar Bears (ages 7-12) and Penguins (ages 4-6) participate in broomball, introduction to speed skating and hockey, play in the snow, and more.  Every Friday, both Penguins and Polar Bears compete in Ice Station Valencia Winter Olympics.  For more information call 661-775-8686 or online.
