YMCA “Open House”

Details:  The Santa Clarita Valley YMCA  is holding an Open House to demonstrate their commitment to our community.  The YMCA has the resources to help our community “learn, grow and thrive and strives everyday to help us be healthy, confidant and connected”.  The YMCA wants us to take advantage of their group lessons, workouts, events and programs.  The Open House will have goodies, fun and gives us an opportunity to learn all that the YMCA has to offer. 

Antelope Valley Fair

Details:  The Antelope Valley Fair will be celebrating 75 years with “Diamonds Are FAIRever”.  The Antelope Valley Fair has all the conventional events associated with a county fair plus so much more.  There will be Livestock, Farm & Garden, Home Arts, Junior Livestock and Open Livestock events. The tradition of Rural Olympic has local community members participating in events such as tractor pulls and hay baling contests.  There will be fair vendors, carnival rides and mouth-watering food.  The concert lineup includes:  Darius Rucker and special guest Ann Marie, Foreigner with special guest Caitlin Crosby, Banda El Recodo/Banda Los Recoditos, Sheryl Crow and Weston Burt, George Thorogood & The Destroyers & Buddy Guy with special guest Quinn Sullivan, Whitesnake/Queensryche starring Geoff Tate.  The Arena Events include: Figure 8 Race, Monster Trucks, Rural Olympics & Fireworks, and Demolition Derby.  Tickets are available online.    Read a story on the concert band on the KHTS website.  More information on tickets and the fair are available online.

Circle of Hope “Vine2Wine Classic”
When:  Saturday, August 17 from 6:30-10:30pm
Where:  California Institute of the Arts, Main Gallery, 24700 McBean Parkway, Valencia
Details: The 12^th Annual Circle of Hope  “Vine2Wine Classic” is a much anticipated event.  The Classic features “unlimited tastings of several hundred upscale wines poured by dozens of outstanding wineries and by donors or fabulous and rare, older, “library wines” from their personal cellars.”  The Beer Garden has unlimited tastings of over a dozen craft brews.  The evening includes dinner and live entertainment.    This year there will be a raffle of expensive, rare and desirable wines, a silent auction of current and older vintages of wine, and much more.  100% of the funds raised benefit Circle of Hope assists uninsured and underinsured breast cancer patients and their families in the Santa Clarita Valley with financial, emotional and educational support services. Beat The Heat And Do A Last Blast Of Summer  With The Kids
Four ideas to end the summer and beat the heat.
1.) 3.) Repertory East Playhouse “9-5: the Musical”

Where:  Repertory East Playhouse, 24266 Main Street, Old Town Newhall
Details:  The Repertory East Playhouse  brings us “9-5: the Musical” based on the 1980s movie.  The book was written by Patricia Resnick.  Music and lyrics for the musical were written by Dolly Parton.  The show centers on the friendship of three women who work in the same large corporation. Canyon Theatre Guild “Why Do Fools Fall In Love?”

Details:  The City of Santa Clarita is has us back into the full swing of summer with the popular free concert series “Concerts In The Park”.  This week’s concert of the summer is the tribute band “Lisa Haley and The Zydecats”.  Lisa Haley and The Zydecats are a hot mix of Cajun and Zydeco spiced with soulful fiddling.  Directions, rules of the park and more information are available online. 

Child & Family Center “Endless Summer Bunco Bash”

5^th Annual Youth Sports Festival & Healthy Families Festival

HMNMH “Care For Your Heart” Health Fair

Details:  Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital is holding “Care For Your Heart” Health Fair, a free community event.  The health fair will have free health education materials, and nutrition and smoking cessation information.  The fair will also have health screening, including: blood pressure monitoring, height and weight analysis, body fat analysis, oxygen saturation and carbon monoxide measurement, cholesterol test (12-hour fasting recommended), glucose test (12-hour fasting recommended), and stroke education.  Spanish speaking materials and translators will be available.  More information is available by calling 661-200-1306 or online.  

SCV Food Pantry Food Drive
When:  now through August
Where:  seven local city facilities and directly at the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry
Details: The City of Santa Clarita and the SCV Food Pantry have partnered for their Fifth Annual Food Drive.  Items most needed: tuna, peanut butter, canned meats, fruit, canned tomatoes, dried soups, cereal, mac & cheese, shampoo, tooth paste, toothbrushes, deodorant, bar soap, diapers and feminine hygiene products.  Summer strains the resources of the Food Pantry with children being home from school.  The Food Pantry is located at 24133 Railroad Avenue in Newhall.  Non-perishable donations can be made from 9am to noon every Monday through Thursday.  Collection bins for non-perishable food donations have been set up at:  City Hall, the SC Sports Complex, the Transit Maintenance Facility, Central Park, Old Town Newhall Library, Valencia Library, and JoAnne Darcy Library in Canyon Country.  Read more in a story on the KTHS website.

City of Santa Clarita “Let’s Go To The Beach!”
When:  Every Saturday and Sunday now through September 1
Where:  From Santa Clarita to Santa Monica Beach
Details:  The City of Santa Clarita has the “Let’s go to the beach!” program again this summer.  There are Santa Clarita Transit buses that go from four different locations around the valley. Ride to the beach with ease on the City’s comfortable, air-conditioned commuter express buses.  You can bring beach chairs, coolers and even surfboards.  You could make plans to spend Saturday night in Santa Monica then take the bus back the next day.  Bus fares are $3.00 each way for children and adults.  Seniors over age 60 and persons with disabilities pay $1.50 each way and persons with disabilities.  Exact cash or TAP cards only.  Persons under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult.  Unaccompanied minors must bring valid school ID to verify age.  For large group accommodations, please call at least five business days in advance.  More information on routes, pick-up location and more is available by calling 294-1BUS or online.

Details:  Ranch Camulos “where the history, myth and romance of Old California still lingers” is again holding “Ramona Days” to celebrate all things related to “Ramona”, the famous 19^th century Helen Hunt Jackson California novel.  Rancho Camulos is known as the Home of Ramona because it is the setting for the popular novel that expands on the Californio mission and rancho history. The 1910 silent movie “Ramona” starring Mary Pickford was in part filed at Rancho Camulos. City of Santa Clarita “Heroin Kills”

Details:  The City of Santa Clarita  is hosting its third  “Heroin Kills” symposium that address the issue of heroin and prescription drug abuse in the Santa Clarita Valley.  Learn about drug abuse, the tools to identify the signs of abuse, and how to keep our children safe.  The evening will have two sections: program from 6:30-7:30pm and breakout session from 7:45-8:30pm.  The breakout session is a new aspect this year and will provide an interactive opportunity to focus on a specific area of interest.  This event is free and open to the public. Second Annual Santa Clarita JetHawks Day

City of Santa Clarita “CERT – Community Emergency Response Training” – Register Now
When:  Saturday, September 7, 14 and 21 (this course is three Saturdays)

Details:  The City of Santa Clarita is offering a “CERT – Community Emergency Response Training” course.  This is a nationally certified course designed to help families, neighborhoods, schools and businesses prepare for effective emergency disaster response through training and preplanning.  The course features fire suppression/utility control, light search and rescue, terrorism disaster preparedness, triage disaster medical operations, and team organization and management.  The materials fee is $30 per person.  Participants must be at least 18 years old.  Register by calling 661-250-3700 or online.
