Details: The Action Family Foundation is partnering for a “SCV Drug Takeback” collection. Gather up your expired, unwanted or unused medication. This is a safe and anonymous way to safely dispose of medications. You won’t even have to get out of your car, just use the parking lot turn-around and drop into the disposal collection box. Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival 2014

Details: The 21st annual Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival is ready to shine with it’s “one-of-a-kind day lineup of music, food, entertainment and activities for Western enthusiasts of all ages.” There are stages with performers, street performers, Western inspired food selections, vendors, family activities, and more special events. And, there isn’t anyone that can talk about the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival without mentioning the peach cobbler. Save tummy room for the cobbler. California Poppy Festival
When: Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27 from 10am-6pm on both days
Where: Lancaster City Park, 43011 10th Street West, just off the 14 Freeway at Avenue L
Details: Celebrate our California state flower, the California Poppy, at the California Poppy Festival. The Festival is two days of music, art, food and fun. New this year: Poppy Beer Pavilion, Bike Show & Shine, and the Largest Dessert Decorating Class for the Guinness Book of World Records. The Festival features: Adventure Zone, Aerospace & Aviation, Animal Attractions, Arts & Crafts, Farmers Market, Festival Foods, Fine Arts, Healthy Living Pavilion, and International Market. Performing on the Main Poppy Stage will be country group, “Jacob Nelson & the Tone Wranglers”; ZZ Top tribute band, “Sharp Dressed Man”; and 14-piece Michael Jackson tribute band, “Foreverland”; and Eagles tribute band, “Hotel California.” You can find times and a full list of zone entertainment and concerts online. Assistance League “5K Run/Walk”
When: Sunday, April 27, registration starts at 6:30am
Where: Newhall Park, 24923 Newhall Avenue, Newhall
Details: The Assistance League is holding their 26th Annual 5K Run/Walk. The run starts at Newhall Park and continues on the South Fork Trail and back to the park. There is a 1K Kid Fun Run that starts at 8am. The fees are $5 for the Kid Fun Run. The 5K fees are $20 for ages 17 and under, and $30 for 18 and above. The 5K Mutt Strut is $30 for participant and dog (on a leash). All runners get a T-Shirt, and dogs get a scarf. Prices are $5 higher on race day. Medals will be awarded to the first three places in each age group for the 5K. All children participating in the 1K Kid Fun Run will receive a medal. YMCA “Healthy Kids Day”

Details: The Santa Clarita Valley Family YMCA is holding “Healthy Kids Day.” “This free event is a fun-filled day that includes interactive games, engaging family activities, and giveaways.” There will be an obstacle course and rock climbing wall. “Helping Hands Day Of Service”

Details: Local Santa Clarita LDS churches will be participating in “Helping Hands Day of Service.” The event will include the clean-up, painting, refurbishing, landscaping, and renewal of ten schools within the Saugus school district. The event is NOT limited to church members, all are welcome to share in this day of service. Councilman Bob Kellar and Dante Acosta, our newest Santa Clarita councilman will join the volunteers. Creative Years “Pirate & Princess Fair And Silent Auction”

Details: Creative Years Infant Center and Preschool is holding “Pirate & Princess Fair And Silent Auction.” Creative Years invites you to “come for the fun, friendship and food!” The event is designed for preschool and young elementary age children. Creative Years alumni photo will be taken at 12:00pm. Children can dress as a pirate or princess to take pictures with the Creative Years pirate ship. Details: The 11th Annual Summer Meltdown Autism Awareness Art & Music Festival is coming to town. The festival’s goal is to bring everyone together to celebrate art and music. Details: Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital admits more than 10,200 children each year through their Emergency Room. To help comfort these young patients, the hospital is starting a “Donate A Bear” drive. Donate a new 9 to12 inch teddy bear and/or other stuffed animal. Castaic Elementary “Earth Day Carnival”

Where: Castaic Elementary School, 30455 Park Vista Drive, Castaic
Details: Castaic Elementary School PTA is holding their 4th Annual Earth Day Carnival Fundraiser. The event features food, games, face painting, jumpers, talent show, vendor village and raffles. To celebrate Earth Day there will be informative presentations on ways to conserve our environment. A Goodwill truck will be on hand for donations. There will be a stuffed animal collection to be used for comfort during emergencies. Entrance is free. Purchase a wristband for unlimited play on games, obstacle course and inflatable race horses. Santa Clarita Artist Association “Spring Art Festival & Sale”

Congressional Art Competition

GraceFest SCV

Details: The First Annual GraceFest SCV is the Santa Clarita Valley’s premier music and message festival. GraceFest SCV will feature Building 429 with songs from their new album “Listen to the Sound.” Other bands in the line up: Worship Jam, Matterband, Truth Jones, Imagine Tomorrow, and Andy Gregory. The festival will also include: children’s play area, prayer tent, and food & vendor booths. Carry-in food and coolers are permitted but not alcoholic drinks. Blankets, beach chairs and beach umbrellas are welcome, though the umbrellas must be down by 5pm. Pets and smoking will not be permitted. Tickets are available through KHTS. Adult tickets through KHTS are valued at $20 and sold for $15. Children’s tickets are for ages 11-19 years and are $10 each. Come to the KHTS studios at 27225 Camp Plenty, Suite 8, at the intersection of Camp Plenty and Soledad Canyon Road or purchase online (online orders have a $2.50 fee for entire order; orders paid for online can be mailed). Kid’s Charities of the SCV will benefit from GraceFest SCV with financial support and scholarships for local youth programs and schools. More information is available online.
College Of The Canyons “Battle Of The Bands”
When: Sunday, May 18 beginning at noon – Deadline for applying is Wednesday, April 30 at 5pm
Where: College of the Canyons Canyon Country Campus, 17200 Sierra Highway, Canyon Country
Details: “Let’s Rock the Hills of the College of the Canyons Canyon Country Campus” with the “Battle of the Bands.” The battle will be held at the Carl A. Rasmussen Amphitheater. This event is free and open to the public. There will be a classic car show and food vendors. If you would like to enter the Battle of the Bands you must apply before the deadline on Wednesday, April 30 at 5pm. Keyboard Galleria is taking submissions online. Keyboard Galleria will select five to seven bands for the competition. Bands selected will have a chance to win prizes such as music equipment and cash. KHTS AM-1220 will play the winning band’s music. Enter before the deadline!

Special Olympics “Shoot-A-Thon”

Details: The Special Olympics is holding their 3rd Annual Shoot-A-thon. This year’s goal of shooting basketballs is 12,000 baskets. The event brings together athlete with intellectual disabilities, local residents, and volunteers from all of the local Santa Clarita high schools. Mixed Martial Arts legend John McCarthy will be back for a second year. Also joining in on the fun: former NBA player Tony Farmer; the L.A. Kings Ice Crew; and the L.A. Sparks mascot, Sparky. Funds raised will benefit Special Olympics Santa Clarita Valley & Tri-Valley Regions and Hoops of Hope. More information is available online.
