Assistance League “Operation School Bell 5K”Assistance League Clothes 2,800 Students For 2013-2014 School Year

The Assistance League “Operation School Bell 5K” (formerly Footsteps For Kids) includes a 5K Run/Walk, 1K Kids Run, and a 5K Mutt Strut.   This is a family style event starting in Newhall Park and working its way down the South Fork Trail and back.  The walks are appropriate for beginner, intermediate or advanced levels.  The Kids Fun Run is for ages 10 years and under; all participants receive a medal; registration is $5.  The Mutt Strut includes a long sleeve shirt and registration is $30 (dogs must be on leashes).  The 5K Run/Walk for 17 years and under includes a long sleeve shirt and registration is $15.  The 5K Run/Walk for 18 years and over includes a long sleeve shirt and registration is $30.  All proceeds benefit Operation School Bell program which provides clothing and shoes for Santa Clarita Valley elementary, junior high and high school age students.  Registration is available online.

Clear your home of household hazardous waste and dispose of it safely at the one-day drive-through City of Santa Clarita “Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up.”  Just load up your waste and drive the event roadway and workers will unload your vehicle.  There is a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste per trip.  Examples of Household Hazardous Waste:  motor oil, oil filter, brake fluid, paint, paint thinner, pesticides, household batteries, car batteries, old TVs, and fluorescent light bulbs.

The Triumph Foundation is hosting its 4th Annual Wheelchair Sports Festival featuring adaptive recreational sports.   “Wheelchair Sports Festival” features wheelchair hockey, basketball, quad rugby (murder ball), racquetball, and handcycling.  The day will also have art workshops and a resource fair.  The festival brings together able-body and disabled alike on a level playing field to participate in games and activities.  This is open to the public.  Everyone can play, coaching and instruction is available.

Congressional Art CompetitionGolden Valley Freshman Wins 2014 Congressional Art Competition

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools.
