Festival Of Trees 2014SCV Buzz-Family Fun

The 11th Annual Festival Of Trees 2014 benefitting the SCV Boys & Girls Club has a new home!  Festival of Trees 2014 has become the unofficial start of the holiday season with over 35 professionally decorated trees, 50 themed table top trees, wreaths, and over 100 gingerbread houses.  There is a holiday shopping boutique the second weekend and a community stage with performances all weekend, both weekends.  Festival of Trees starts Friday, November 14 at noon, with Jingle Jam Swing Dancing happening from 7-10pm.  General Admission tickets are $6 for age 15 and up; $3 for ages 4-14; $4 for age 65 and up; free admission for age 3 and under.  Purchase General Admission Tickets at the door (not available online).  Saturday, November 15 is the Holiday Hocus Pocus, Part 1 from 6-8:30pm (ticket required – available online).  Santa will be at the Festival all day on Sunday, November 16.  Holiday Hocus Pocus, Part 2 happens from 6-8:30pm on Friday, November 21 (ticket required – available online).  The Magic of the Lights Gala takes place on Saturday, November 22 from 6:30-11:30pm (gala ticket required – available online).  Again, times vary for the open-to-public hours, so please consult the website.  Read more in a story on the KHTS website: Festival Of Trees Opens Friday In Valencia, Will Run Two Weekends.

The kick-off for Old Town Newhall holiday celebrations starts with “Sip & Shop.”  From 3pm-6pm on Old Town Newhall’s Main Street enjoy the Sip & Shop party.  There will be wine tasting, appetizers, promotions and specials at local retailers. “Light Up Main Street” starts at 6:30pm.  Presented by PayForward, Light Up Main Street is the official turning on of lights that transforms Main Street in the proverbial Winter Wonderland.  There will be thousands of lights and light displays along the street.  The 23-foot Christmas tree in front of the Old Town Newhall Library will be a showpiece of lights.  The evening will offer holiday music, family-friendly activities, and a chance to take a picture with Santa.  Read more in an article on the KHTS website: Second Annual “Light Up Main Street” Saturday.  Free parking will be available at the Old Town Newhall Library and the Metrolink Station.

YMCA Diabetes Awareness Day

The Santa Clarita Valley YMCA is hosting a Diabetes Awareness Day Lunch n’ Learn, in conjunction with the UCLA Department of Medicine.  The SCV YMCA wants us all to know the risk for pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.  Learn preventative steps to reduce the chances of developing diabetes.  Learn the basic lifestyle changes that can help.  In the United States, 26 million people have diabetes and 79 million have pre-diabetes.

Newhall Library Opens Its Doors To Literacy And Arts FestivalSanta Clarita Literacy & Arts Festival

This year marks the 8th Annual Santa Clarita Literacy & Arts Festival.  The Festival “offers the community an opportunity to explore, play, see, create and hear the different forms of arts and literacy.”  Authors and performers will be storytelling.  There will be exhibits, interactive displays and art activities.  Check out Toast Mural, Maker Space, Post-It Art, General Store & Stone Soup, SCV Ballet Company, Unplugged Dining Photo Op, and Green Eggs & Ham.

College Of The Canyons Theatre “The Illusion”

College of the Canyons Theatre has “The Illusion.”  Tony Kushner, Pulitzer Prize winner and National Medal of Honor recipient, “bring his sophisticated style and breathtaking language to the French Baroque’s most powerful romance.” More information and tickets are available by calling 661-362-5304 or online.”  Caution, The Illusion may include situations, language and actions that may startle some patrons.  Children under age 5 are not allowed in the theater.

Michael Hoefflin Foundation Golf Tournament

The Jerry Schauer Invitational Golf Tournament benefits the Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children’s Cancer.  Scott Schauer, a former executive director of the foundation, came up with the fundraiser tournament as a tribute to his father, who is also a supporter of the foundation and is battling cancer himself.  Registration starts at 9:30am with a Shotgun Start at 10:30am.  After the tournament, there will be an awards dinner and auction.  Awards will be given for: Closest to the Pin, Hole in One, and Longest Drive.

Seniors Thanksgiving Feast & Party
The SCV Senior Center is now taking reservations for the free Thanksgiving Feast & Party.  All Santa Clarita seniors are welcome.  The doors open at 10:15am Thanksgiving Day with dinner starting at 11am.  The Feast & Party is hosted by the SCV Senior Center, William S. Hart Union High School District, the Santa Clarita Lions Club and the Castaic Lions Club.  The feast starts with appetizers, moves onto roasted turkey with all the trimmings, and finally apple or pumpkin pie a la mode for dessert.  Boxed leftovers are offered along with a second boxed meal since the Senior Center is closed on Friday.  Reservations go quickly.

Santa Clarita Ballet “The Nutcracker”get your tickets now!
You know the holidays are here when it’s time to get your tickets for the Santa Clarita Ballet’s performances of “The Nutcracker.” The Nutcracker with Marie meeting the Mouse King, Snowflakes, and journeying with the Nutcracker Prince through the Pine Forest into The Land of Sweets with its Sugar Plum Fairy; Chinese, Russian, and Spanish dancers, has come to be associated with the Christmas season.  Whether it is your first time to see The Nutcracker or an annual tradition, you are sure to enjoy the Santa Clarita Ballet performances.  Tickets are now on sale.   Although performances are at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center, tickets are only available through Santa Clarita Ballet.  Tickets are $32 for Orchestra/Box seats; $30 for Balcony, and $28 for Seniors (65 and up) and Children under age 10.  Call for tickets at 661-251-0366.  Tickets are also available at the SC Ballet Box Office: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 3-6pm; Wednesday from 3:30-6pm; and Saturday from 9:30am-1:30pm.  Santa Clarita Ballet address is:  26798 Oak Avenue, Santa Clarita.

SCV Senior Center “Sensational Seventies Concert”
Come dance, sing and enjoy the “Sensational Seventies Concert” at the SCV Center with iconic 70s music.  The SCV Senior Center Silvertone Musicians perform a whole spectrum of popular tunes from Neil Diamond, The Bee Gees, Carole King and Roberta Flack.  They will also cover music from 70s shows: Sesame Street, Star Wars, Annie, and A Chorus Line.

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood.
