COC “Green Up” Conference

When:  Saturday, October 18 from 8:30am-2:30pm
Where:  College of the Canyons, Valencia Campus, Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center
Details:  College of the Canyons is hosting the Second Annual “Green Up” Conference.  The conference is an “effort to promote water and energy sustainability efforts amid record drought conditions.”  Topics will be related to water and energy conservation, including:  lawn replacement and sustainable landscaping strategies; water and energy conservation strategies; sustainability in academia, including waste management; non-toxic pest control; and sustainability in theory and action.  Dan Masnada, General Manager of Castaic Lake Water Agency, will deliver the keynote address.  The conference is free and open to the public. Lunch is included. Register online in advance to reserve a spot.

Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital “Texas Hold ‘Em”

When: Saturday, October 18 from 5:30pm-9pm
Where:  Wolf Creek Brewery, 25108 Rye Canyon Loop
Details: Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital is partnering with Wolf Creek Brewery for a “Texas Hold ‘Em” Poker Tournament and Bunco evening.  The evening will have card playing while sampling Wolf Creek Brewery microbrews.  Beer, wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase.  Two food trucks will be selling their items.  Poker buy-in is $20, re-buys are $20, and add-on at the break is $20.  Bunco can be played for $15.  Proceeds will benefit Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.  RSVP by email frenchj@henrymayo.com

West Ranch High “Glenn Miller Orchestra”

When:  Thursday, October 16 at 7pm
Where:  West Ranch High School Theater, 26255 W. Valencia Boulevard, Stevenson Ranch
Details:  West Ranch High School is hosting the world famous “Glenn Miller Orchestra.”  The orchestra will perform compositions from the original band and from the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band, including:  In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade, Tuxedo Junction, Chattanooga Choo-Choo, and Pennsylvania 6-5000.  Funds raised will benefit the school’s music programs.  Ticket sale locations are available online or purchase online.   More information is available by calling 661-222-1220, ext 645 or online.

Santa Clarita Artists Association “Art Classic Gala”

When:  Saturday, October 18 from 2pm-5:30pm, public viewing on Sunday, October 19 from 10am-4pm
Where:  William S. Hart Park, Hart Hall, 24151 Newhall Avenue, Newhall
Details:   This year’s “Art Classic Gala” presented by the Santa Clarita Artists Association celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the formation of the Artists Association.  The Fine Art Show and Art Classic Gala will include beverages, appetizers and desserts with smooth jazz entertainment.  Approximately 150 pieces of art will be part of the judging.  All the artwork will be available for purchase at the show.  There will be a silent auction with high quality artwork among the items.  A free public viewing takes place on Sunday, October 19 from 10am-4pm.  Tickets for the Gala are $25 each.  More information and tickets are available by calling 661-252-7639 or online.

Lombardi Ranch “Fall Festival”

When:  now through Friday, October 31
Where:  Lombardi Ranch, 29527 Bouquet Canyon Road, Saugus
Details:  Lombardi Ranch is holding “Fall Festival 2014.”  The weather is Santa Clarita fall and Lombardi is bringing us autumn joy. For over 30 years Lombardi Ranch has been a working farm bringing family happiness during this change of seasons.  “Enjoy live bands, petting zoos, wagon rides, face paintings and more!  And remember, no child leaves empty handed!  Each little one leaves Lombardi Ranch with a balloon, sticker, and a smile on their face.”  A favorite at Lombardi Ranch Fall Festival is Scarecrow Alley that winds through the cornstalk fields.  In addition to your pumpkins and Indian corn, check out the fresh produce: corn, tomatoes, onions, peppers, squashes, and flowers.  More information, a full schedule of events and directions are available by calling 661-296-8697 or online.

Brittany Foundation “A Day In Their Paws”

When:  Saturday, October 18 from 12noon-4pm
Where:  Brittany Foundation, 36220 Anthony Road 101, Agua Dulce
Details:  Brittany Foundation is again hosting its unusual fundraiser, “A Day In Their Paws.”
The event wants to raise awareness on how rescue dogs live every day.  Volunteers will be spending 24 hours in a kennel.  You can help by sponsoring a volunteer.  A list of volunteers and dogs is available online.  The afternoon is a free family friendly event with music, food, raffles, silent auction and tours.  More information is available online.

Blue Star Ranch Poker Ride

When:  Saturday, October 18, gates open at 8am, ride starts at 10am
Where:  Castaic Lake, Castaic
Details:  The Blue Star Ranch Poker Ride is a Horseback Trail Poker Ride.  Cash prizes include $1,000 for First Place, $300 for Second Place and $200 for Third Place.  A Jersey Mike’s box lunch will be served.  Registration includes Trail Escort and Poker Hand.  You do not need a horse to attend.  This fundraiser benefits veterans.  For more information and registration call 661-312-6184.

Canyon Theatre Guild “Once Upon A Mattress”

SENSES “Area 51”

When:  Thursday, October 15 from 7pm-10pm
Where:  Old Town Newhall on Main Street
Details:  City of Santa Clarita’s SENSES is the ultimate block party.  SENSES is held the third Thursday of the month.  This month’s theme “Area 51” kicks off the Halloween spirit.  Come listen and dance to Fast Times, a 80s flashback band.  The food trucks will be on hand serving amazing food.  “As conspiracy theories go, SENSES audiences are hopeful to see an unidentified flying object over Old Town Newhall.” This free public event is open for all ages. West Ranch High Wildcat Classic 2014

When:  Saturday, October 18, competition begins at 5pm
Where:  Valencia High School stadium, 27801 Dickason Drive, Valencia
Details:  West Ranch High is hosting the Wildcat Classic 2014.  The Classic is a Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association Marching Band Competition.  Local high school bands will be performing along with marching bands from the surrounding valleys, the Greater LA area, Ventura County, and Kern County.  Tickets are $10.  More information is available by email davechittum@gmail.com or online.

City Of Santa Clarita “Underwater Pumpkin Carving”

When:  Saturday, October 18, doors open at 6pm, carving begins at 6:45pm
Where:  Santa Clarita Aquatics Center, 20850 Centre Pointe Parkway, at Golden Valley Parkway
Details:  The City of Santa Clarita is holding the Seventh Annual “Underwater Pumpkin Carving” contest and Spooky Family Fair.  The Underwater Pumpkin Carving has teams of certified scuba divers competing.  The Spooky Family Fair will include crafts, games and trick-or-treating around the pool.  Come dressed in Halloween costumes.  Read more in an article on the KHTS website: Seventh Annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest On Oct. 18.  Registration for the contest must be entered by Thursday, October 16.  More information is available by calling 661-250-3767 or online.

Rancho Camulos “Then & Now”

When: Saturday, October 18 at 2pm
Where:  Old Town Newhall Library, 24500 Main Street, Newhall
Details:  Rancho Camulos “Then & Now” will be presented by Judy Trien, chairman of the board of Rancho Camulos Museum and founder of San Buenaventura Research Associates.  The presentation will include 19 and 20th century photographs and art comparing “Then & Now” at the Rancho.

Rancho Camulos “Trafalgar Day Regency Picnic”

When:  Sunday, October 19 at 11am
Where:  Rancho Camulos Museum, 5164 East Telegraph Road – 10 miles West of I-5 on Highway 126
Details:  Rancho Camulos Museum is holding “Trafalgar Day Regency Picnic.”  The day will be a “step back in time.”  This will be a Regency style picnic with music and dance in honor of the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.  Admission to the event is $5.  More information on Rancho Camulos and directions are available online.

Caregiver Bootcamp Support Group

When:  Thursday, October 16 from 6:00pm-7:30pm, and 8 week bootcamp
Where:  SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market Street, Newhall – Rooms A1 and A2
Details:  The SCV Senior Center knows that caregiving is often difficult so is holding “Caregiver Bootcamp Support Group.”  The bootcamp is designed to “boost class members with intensive and supportive information and practices as well as fresh perspectives and replenished energy.”  The class will meet for eight sessions, excluding Thanksgiving week, and will end on Thursday, December 11.  Donations will be accepted to cover the cost of materials.

Art Exhibit & Reception At Canyon Theatre Guild

When: Thursday, October 16 from 6pm-8:30pm
Where:  Canyon Theatre Guild, 24242 Main Street, Old Town Newhall
Details:  Canyon Theatre Guild will exhibit the art and reception for award winning photographer Glen Glancy.  Meet the artist and enjoy his photographs of Mt. Ranier in the Spring; the Grand Tetons both Spring and Fall; and other landscapes of the West including Bryce Canyon, Zion, Yosemite, and Aspen.  This event is free and open to the public.  If you can’t make the reception, you can still see the exhibit on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays from 10am-5pm and Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 11am-6pm through October 25.  More information is available by calling 661-253-3173.

Family Promise SCV “Socktober”

Details:  Family Promise SCV is taking part in a national sock collection drive for our local homeless.  Read more in an article on the KHTS website:  Family Promise Officials Collecting Socks For “Socktober”  Family Promise SCV’s mission is to mobilize community faith groups in the SCV to assist homeless families to achieve sustainable independence.  Call Family Promise SCV to schedule a pickup or drop-off at 661-251-2868.  You can also drop off sock donations at KHTS, Monday through Friday from 8:30am-5pm.  Learn more about Family Promise SCV online .

LARC Halloween Festival 2014
When:  Sunday, October 26 starting at 1pm
Where:  LARC Ranch, 29890 North Bouquet, Saugus – just north of Vasquez Canyon Road
Details: LARC Ranch is celebrating with their “LARC Halloween Festival 2014.”  The afternoon will be filled with Rock ‘n Roll music and dancing with DJ Bino Bates.  Sponsors are In & Out, Jamba Juice, and Tart Boy, so the food will be a hit.  A Festival needs games and there will be all kinds of Carnival Games.  LARC will use funds raised to help with the water crisis, operating expenses not covered by government funding, and to complete the solar project.  This weekend enjoy music by The Pink Cadillacs, Zydeco Party Band, and Beer Truck.  Stop by for treats at the Bake Sale hosted each weekend by non-profits from within our valley.  Tickets are $125 for adults, $50 for children, and $325 for a Family Package covering two adults and two children.  More information on LARC and the Halloween Festival is available by calling 661-296-8636 or online.

Soroptimist International Of Greater Santa Clarita Valley “The Wine Affair”
When:  Sunday, October 26 from 2pm-6pm
Where:  Town Center Drive & The Patios
Details:  Soroptimist International Of Greater Santa Clarita Valley invites everyone to sip, stroll and savor the sounds at their Seventh Annual “Wine Affair.”  Various restaurants and stores play host as participants stroll from location to location to “sip, stroll, and savor.”  Premium wines, beer and non-alcoholic drinks are the offerings for the “sip” portion of the evening.  Live music will be offered at each location and will fill the air along the way.  “Savor’ appetizers at each location.  VIP tickets are $100 and General Admission tickets are $50.  The Soroptimist mission is to help women and girls locally and throughout the world.  More information, a vendor/strolling map, and tickets are available by calling 661-312-4428, emailpamingram@pamingram.com or online.

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools.
