What: “Stop the Bleed’ is a national initiative designed to provide bystanders with the tools and knowledge they can use to stop life-threatening bleeding. Uncontrolled bleeding can result from man-made and natural disasters (e.g., active shooters, bombings, earthquakes) or from other emergency situations (e.g., vehicle crashes, power tool accidents). Severe bleeding can kill within minutes before EMS or other public safety providers arrive. The person closest to you may be the only one who can “stop the bleed.”

What: Lent is here and St. Clare’s is again holding their Lenten Fish Fry. The dinners include beer battered Alaska cod, coleslaw and a choice of French fries, rice pilaf, or beans. Also available is the 2-fish taco plate served with rice and beans. Desserts can be found at the Bake Sale table.  Milk, coffee and tea are included with dinner and sodas, beer, wine and margaritas are available for purchase.  A two-piece dinner and/or the taco plate is $9 and three-piece dinner is $10.  Meals are dine-in or take-out.  Proceeds benefit local charities and families in need.

What: College of the Canyons is hosting a special conversation with Larry Hurst, Los Angeles-based artist and former COC Gallery Director, whose work is currently on display in the art gallery. The one-person exhibition brings together works from three areas of Hurst’s aesthetic investigations: his geometric abstract paintings; his poetic collage; and his hand-crafted sculptures.

What: “It’s Like, Totally Rad Art” is an exhibit that features a variety of art addressing the theme of the 1980s.  The exhibition will be displayed in conjunction with the Santa Clarita Public Library’s One Story, One City program, which celebrates the book “Ready Player One.” Pop culture from the 1980s is featured extensively in this book, and the art to be displayed will feature, highlight or use design elements from the 1980s, as well as iconic pop culture figures, historic events and more. Guests of the artist reception can enjoy light appetizers and live music, and will have a chance to meet the artists featured in the exhibition.

What: As a jazz/world vocalist, Imani’s diverse talents have led to collaborations with many music ensembles, as well as film and television projects. Most notably, her voice was featured on the musical soundtrack of the film, “The Jane Biography,” and she recently performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Audience will be seated on the main stage and will have an opportunity to meet the artist!

Annual St. Francis Dam Disaster Lecture, Bus Tour

What: First attendees can watch a presentation by Dr. Alan Pollack and Dianne Erskine-Hellrigel at the Saugus Train Station freight room, followed by a Q&A session with Alan, Dianne, and dam expert Frank Rock. Then it’s a bus tour to the dam site with Alan, Dianne, and Frank. Cost is $40.00 per person pre-paid and includes a snack and bottled water.

“Bernstein! A Centennial Celebration” at the CTG

What: Join the Santa Clarita Valley Concert Band as they celebrate the centennial of an American icon, Leonard Bernstein. He was one of the most prolific American composers of the 20th century, and was a true Renaissance man as a great musician, conductor, and lecturer. The program includes Overture to Candide, selections from West Side Story, The Wrong Note Rag from Wonderful Town, along with many others.

“Hope and a Future Run” at West Creek Park

When: Saturday, March 10 at 7:30 a.m.

What: This community event benefits children with developmental disabilities in the Imago Dei School at Trinity Classical Academy. All ages are welcome! The course takes 5K/10K participants through the paseo system in Valencia. The 1K event takes place at West Creek Park. Prior to the start of the event, there will be a health and fitness expo in the park, as well as a Kids Zone.

West Ranch Art Auction

When: Saturday, March 10 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

What: West Ranch art students’ work will be auctioned off at Barnes and Noble all day. Proceeds will be donated to the art department so students don’t have to pay for their own art supplies. Donations for the art department will also be accepted.

What: The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring the 38th St. Patrick’s Day 5K race at the historic oil drilling town of Mentryville in Newhall. The race is an “out and back” course that begins at Mentryville Park and takes you in front of Charles Mentry’s grand 13-room mansion, a one-room schoolhouse and a period barn.
