SCV Habitat for Heroes

Details:  The kick-off event for SCV Habitat for Heroes is here.  The project calls for the refurbishment of a home belonging to a veteran wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan.  This is the first of what will become an annual event on the Saturday before Veterans Day.  Veterans face a high-rate of unemployment in civilian life.  And those wounded face even more hardships, not the least being modification or refurbishment of their homes.  Click here for more information on the project.  Click here for a story on the veteran selected for SCV Habitat for Heroes first project.

Santa Clarita Marathon

Details:  This year’s Santa Clarita Marathon will use the newly opened trails along the San Francisquito Creek.  Whether you’re a runner or walker, the Santa Clarita Marathon has an event for you.  Events are: the marathon, half-marathon, 5K, Mayor’s Walk and Kid K Fun Run.  The city of Santa Clarita is partnering with the non-profit Soles 4 Souls to collect new and gently used shoes for three local charities:  SC Winter Shelter, Family Promise and Single Mothers Outreach.  Click here for more information.

Zonta – Tribute Dinner
When:  Friday, November 4, starts at 6pm
Where:  Odyssey Restaurant, 15600 Odyssey Drive, Granada Hills
Details:  This year’s theme for the Zonta Celebrity Tribute Dinner is “The Loan Ranger Rides Again” in tribute to honoree, James D. Hicken, president and chief executive officer of the Bank of Santa Clarita.  The theme references Hicken’s banking career and his teen years working summer on a Wyoming cattle ranch.  Hicken is a 15 year resident of the Santa Clarita Valley, and has supported actively several local community organizations.  He has served in leadership positions with the Operating Board for HMNM Hospital, Goodwill Southern California, Hospital Association of Southern California and College of the Canyons Foundation.  The Tribute supports Zonta’s scholarship, grant and community service programs.  Zonta is dedicated to improving the lives of women locally and worldwide.  Click here for more information on James Hicken, the Tribute Dinner and Zonta.

Rancho Camulos – Ramona Days
When:  Saturday, November 5 from 10am-4pm
Where:  Rancho Camulos, on HWY 126, 10 miles west of I-5 (or 2 miles East of Piru)   
Details:  Performances at 11am, 1pm and 3pm by the core cast and dancers from the world famous Hemet Ramona Outdoor Play, will highlight the fourth annual “Ramona Days.    Helen Hunt Jackson’s 1884 classic California novel, Ramona, will come to life at the “Home of Ramona”, as we celebrate all things Ramona.  In addition to seeing vignettes from the play,  watch the 1910 Mary Pickford movie filmed on location at Camulos, view unique memorabilia and historic displays, experience  living history and attend presentations by Ramona experts, such as “Ramona Memories “ author Dydia DeLyser, Ramona pageant historian Phil Brigandi, and film maker Hugh Munro Neely.  Also, there will also be food, music, dance, art and craft sales and demonstrations, original artwork by local artists, museum and garden tours, free children’s activities and more.    Visitors are encouraged to come in costume and character for a fun experience.  Admission fees:  advance tickets are $5 and gate admission is $10.  Ages 12 and under are free. Rancho Camulos – Ramona Days Gala Fundraiser
When:  Sunday, November 6 from 1-5pm
Where:  Rancho Camulos, on HWY 126, 10 miles west of I-5 (or 2 miles East of Piru)  
Details:  This Ramona Days benefit reception at Rancho Camulos National Historic Landmark which will be highlighted by a special screening of D.W. Griffith’s 1910 Ramona starring Mary Pickford with live musical presentation of the soundtrack featuring composer Maria Newman and unique insights provided by film historian and the editor of the re-mastered film, Hugh Munro Neely of the Mary Pickford Institute for Film Education. In addition to the movie which was filmed on location at Rancho Camulos, there will be special tours, an elegant small plate buffet, wine, and nonalcoholic beverages. Proceeds will benefit this 501(c) (3) museum’s preservation, restoration, and educational efforts. Seating is very limited and the donation is $100 per person. Hart Marching Band’s Rampage
When:  Saturday, November 5, gates open at 10:30am, the day ends with awards from 9-10pm
Where:  College of the Canyons, Cougar Stadium, 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road 
Details:  More than 30 high school bands from around the state will take part in the Hart Marching Band’s 28^thAnnual Rampage.  The gates open at 10:30am, and the first band performs at 11:15am.  Local high schools, Hart, Valencia, West Ranch, Saugus, Golden Valley and Canyon, will be there.  Rampage is an all-day competition that entertains all ages.  One highlight of the event is the largest mass drum-line in Southern California featuring drummers from all the performing bands.  Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, and free for kids under age 5.  Admission price is for the entire day of events.  Food will be available for purchase.  A delicious tri-tip barbeque dinner is also being promised.  Call 818-266-4120 or click here for more information.
