Show Benefits City’s Veterans Memorial Plaza
Wartime Romance, a love story based on real events during World War II, will run from June 2 to 4 at the College of the Canyons Performing Arts Center. Wartime Romance is about a dive-bomber pilot stationed in the Philippines who writes love letters to his girl in Kansas. Marilyn Hackett, writer and producer of the show, took genuine love letters that her mother and father exchanged while he served in the war. Wartime Romance, directed by Wayne Hackett, is filled with classic music and dance routines from the WWII era.
The Hackett’s are Santa Clarita residents. Marilyn said the community is very involved with the production of the show. Many local businesses and residents sponsored the production and the City provided Marilyn with funds from the Arts Grant.
“One endeavor truly touched my heart, The Veterans Historical Plaza,” said Marilyn. “Wartime Romance is serving as a fund raising event to place bronze statues and storyboards of all of America’s battles into the Plaza and to provide additional funds for our men and women serving in our military.”
Proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorship revenue go directly to the non-profit Historical Veterans Memorial Committee to help finance the artistic and aesthetic elements of the Plaza, which was dedicated Memorial Day 2005. Marilyn said Wartime Romance is a great night of family entertainment. All ages will enjoy the fun-filled show with great actors, a big band ensemble and a professional swing dance team to set the mood for the 1940s. Each attendee will receive a program that contains a postcard and can write a message thanking those serving in Iraq and other stations around the world. The Santa Clarita post office created a cancellation stamp so that all postcards are postage free.
