Job Shadow Day Puts Kids In The Drivers Seat

ImageToday, hundreds of High School students put their education on hold for half the day, to go to work with local businesses. It was all a part of the Groundhog Job Shadow Day, organized by the School and Business Alliance of Santa Clarita.

KHTS had four shadows: Saugus students Kayla Simon, Sam Rosas, Jamie Kucharski and Bowman student Nichole Goltz.

They started their day with Hometown Morning Show host John Summers, and they got to see first hand what it took to put a radio show together. They also got their chance to be on the radio, giving several weather reports.

Then it was with me, KHTS News Reporter Jon Dell, where they attended a press conference for the groundbreaking of Fire Station # 132 in Canyon Country.

They took most of the pictures that you see in this article, and they learned about how KHTS publishes and airs news.

Then it was a sit down in the production room for a quick lesson on editing, followed by a sales and management presentation by owner Carl Goldman.

At noon, the school and business alliance invited the students and their business hosts to a lunch, followed by a speech from City Manager Ken Pulskamp.

The day went quickly, and so it’s not as if the students were expected to be experts in their career field by the end. In fact, as Anne Kerman from the School and Business Alliance said; “Sometimes, students find that they don’t want to be in a particular career, and that’s valuable too.”

Knowledge really is the main objective of the day’s event, so that kids can get some sort of exposure to a real life scenario in a given career field. What the students learned today could help steer them in the right direction right now, with the education paths they choose.

So maybe they won't all grow up to be in radio, but at least they never have to ask themselves “What if?”
