EverythingSCV.com for October 27, 2013

Halloween is only a few days away. Are you ready? I’ve seen some spectacular “haunts” out and about in the Santa Clarita Valley. Kudos to all who put such hard work, creativity and long hours into the effort to keep the SCV “spooky!” Top of my list is “The Dark Realm” open on Halloween night from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 28621 Sugar Pine Way in Saugus. Happy Haunting!

Empowering HeARTS

I am so excited to be honored at the Empowering HeARTS Gala to be held Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center in Valencia. The event will run 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $65 each in advance, $75 at the door. Other honorees will include Gloria Mercado-Fortine, Marsha McLean, Jenny Ketchepaw, Stacie Locke, Leslie Carr, Anna Frutos-Sanchez, Margo Hudson, Heather Stewart and Rachael Rodriguez. Artwork, inspired by each of the 10 honorees, will be on display at the event. One artist will take home the grand prize for best visual depiction of an honoree. I am hoping to see a good turnout to support the important work of Single Mothers Outreach. I will be humbled to see my friends attend, too! For more information visit www.singlemothersoutreach.org.

Wild West Rose Show

The Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society will host its 20th Annual Rose Show themed “Wild West Roses” on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 2 and Nov. 3, at William S. Hart Park, 24151 Newhall Ave., Newhall. The show will be held in Hart Hall.

In addition to the rose show, there will be an art show on the rear patio of

Hart Hall that will feature rose art by many local artists. The public is invited to attend both events free of charge.

Everyone is welcome to exhibit their own home-grown roses at the rose show, including novices and children. You do not have to be a member of the rose society to exhibit, and there are no entry fees. Bring your roses in a container of water and the rose society will furnish the vases and the entry tags to be used at the show. The name of each rose, and the exhibitor’s name, must be included on the entry tags.

Rose Show Prizes

There will be 76 prizes (crystal and cash) and hundreds of ribbons awarded to many types of roses. Waterford Crystal trophies will be given to the top roses, including Hybrid Tea Queen, Miniature Queen, Floribunda Queen, Miniflora Queen, Best Antique Rose, and Most Fragrant Rose. Two novices can win a crystal prize as well as a $25 gift certificate sponsored by Green Thumb Nursery. Fifty other categories of roses can win $20 cash prizes for the best blue ribbon winners.

Rose entries will be received in the parking lot from 7 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Saturday. Arrive early because entries will close promptly at 9:45 a.m. From 10 a.m. to noon 12 horticultural rose judges will select the best roses to be awarded prizes. The rose show will open to the public at 12:30 p.m. (or as soon as judging is completed) at which time the winners will be on display. All winners will be presented their awards at 2 p.m. The show will close at 4 p.m.

On Sunday, the Art Exhibit will be located inside Hart Hall and the roses will be featured as a Rose Celebration at the center of the hall. Hours on Sunday will be 11a.m. to 3 p.m.

Free rose bouquet

A free bouquet of roses will be given to new members who join the rose society at the rose show. Annual membership dues are $20, which includes 9 emailed issues of the 12-page, award-winning full-color newsletter “Rose Ecstasy.” For a complete show schedule, exhibit rules, and extensive information about roses, visit the Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society website at http://scvrs.homestead.com/RoseShow.html. Top 51

My former employer, The Signal, held its annual Top 51 dinner and recognition event on Thursday evening at Robinson Ranch in Sand Canyon. Maureen Daniels did an outstanding job organizing the event. I was invited to attend by Shelley Hann (who wore a cute little cap with the number “50” embroidered on the front of the hat to reflect her number in the rankings). Our table included some very powerful movers and shakers: Jacquie and Harold Petersen, Richard and Marian Sanders and Gary and Myrna Condie. Jim Ventress, also scheduled to sit with us, was unable to attend.

Jeri Seratti-Goldman, (I am now affiliated with KHTS, co-owned by Jeri and Carl Goldman), was also unable to attend, but I was pleased to see that the on-again, off-again “ban” on other media was lifted for this year’s Top 51 list to recognize Jeri for her important work to benefit veterans in the SCV, as well as her long list of philanthropic work in the SCV.

Seen at 51

I saw so many well known faces at the 51 event it was hard to remember them all. Among those spotted in the crowd were Marlee Lauffer, Don and Cheri Fleming, Dan and Carol Masnada, Michael D. Antonovich, Rosalind Wayman, Bob and Kathy Kellar, TimBen and Ingrid Boydston, Marsha and Dale McLean, Laurene Weste and James McCarthy, Rabbi Mark Blazer, Cary Quashen, Dianne and Roger Van Hook, Scott and Vanessa Wilk, Roger Seaver, Morris Thomas, Rob Challinor, Fred Arnold, Marc Winger and Eileen Mann, Maria Gutzeit, Darrell and Patty Paulk, Lois Bauccio, Rick and Ann Patterson, Jason Crawford, Joe and Tammy Messina, Terri Crain, Kathy Norris, Father Richard Martini, Duane and Pauline Harte, Al Ferdman, Dan Sterkel, Hunt Braly, Belinda Crawford, Joan Lucid, Calvin Hedman, Frank and Carol Rock, Gail Pinsker, Bill Cooper, Bruce Fortine and Gloria Mercado-Fortine, Jim Backer and Wayne Crawford.
