Ewart Family Wednesday Update

Here’s the latest update on the Ewart Family. In the early morning on Tuesday, December 20th, fire destroyed their Valencia home. Six family members were in the house at the time, three were seriously injured and sent to the Grossman Burn Center.  Since the fire, our Valley has jumped in to assist.  This is the latest update courtesy of neighbors, Josy and Steve Block.

Today  (Tuesday) MICHAEL had a doctors visit back at the Grossman Center.  This was a routine visit and everything went well.  He will continue to return to the Burn Center a few times a week for ongoing check-ups.

DAVID - We understand that he is doing much better.  Hugh and Essie got to visit with him today.  He is getting stronger and stronger every day…please continue sending prayers his way.

*  It is expected that when David can begin feeding himself, he will be released shortly after.  Upon his release (or just prior to), he will have similar needs that Michael had, so…to avoid a last-minute "rush" to get so many items at the last minute, we will ask for the following items by, say, the end of the week.  Please send an email if you are able to pick up something on the list, and wait for a confirmation to make sure that no one else is buying that item.  (Thank you).  Also, if you can wash the items in Dreft Detergent prior to delivery, that would be great, if not, we are happy to launder them upon delivery.

3 Hypoallergenic pillows

6 White pillow cases (100% cotton)

5 White Twin Sheet Sets (100% cotton)

1 lightweight cotton blanket (100% cotton)

10 white socks (pairs)

20 white wash cloths

5 white towels

1/2 dozen large grip pencils or pens

1 "Boyfriend" bed pillow (to sit up in bed and read with)

1 TV Tray to serve him meals in bed

2 pair slip-on style slippers

*  Please mark your calendars for Monday, January 30th from 5:00pm to 10:00pm. Baja Fresh has so kindly offered to donate 15% of their sales to the Ewart Catastrophe Fund.  This applies to Dine-In or Take-Out, between 5pm and 10pm.  Offer valid at two Valencia restaurants.  IMPORTANT:  You must bring the attached flier with you in order for the Ewarts to receive the proceeds.  All details are on this flyer.  Feel free to make copies of the flier and distribute them to whomever you like.  These will be passed around Hart High and Placerita Junior High Schools.  Hart Baseball will be putting this up on their web-site.  Heartfelt thanks to Lori Bledsoe for setting this up!!!

*  Thank you to Cheryl Strong for purchasing & laundering some pajama bottoms/t-shirts for David.  Now that David is going to the courtyard & moving about the center a little, he can use some fresh jammies.
*  Since there are such a limited number of visitation hours, we would like to ask the folks who are lucky enough to get to visit David if you could just send us a little update regarding your observations & experiences – we’d love to share this with everyone so they will have a better feel for how David is doing.  Nothing fancy – even just a couple of lines (thank you!).
*  If you haven’t been added to the Ewarts Meal Rotation list and you are interested in providing meals, please contact Diane Kaufler at:  (661)259-2766 or email her at:  Please be sure to leave Diane your telephone number.  We want to make sure that everyone who wants to help with meals gets on the list!  The Ewarts have been greatly enjoying all of your wonderful culinary talents!!!
Michael’s E-mail…The family has said it is okay to give out Michael’s email address so his friends can send him notes.  Please understand that Michael may not be able to type for a while…but he will enjoy getting uplifting notes from his friends.  You can send emails to:
*  Thank you to Paula Charnock for all her behind-the-scenes efforts in coordinating a lot of stuff for the Ewart family.  Today, she was able to deliver a flat screen monitor for Michael to start using.  In his new set-up, space is very limited, and the big computer monitor was taking all the space of the work area.  Since homework will begin within the next couple of weeks, it is a tremendous help to have some workspace available for him to tend to his studies.
*  Thank you to Jennifer Heitkamp-Koch who has offered a storage facility for anyone who has offered to donate computers & printers.  We are hoping that next week those of you who offered printers & computers will receive a call arranging a convenient pick-up time.
*  Remember…if someone you know does not receive their emails, or if one night your email doesn’t come through, it probably means that for some reason it "bounced back".  Go ahead & check the website for updates

*  If you have items you’d like to donate for our RAFFLE on March 19th at the Comedy Benefit, please send us an email for instructions on where to send or deliver your items.  We would like to receive all donated items by March 12th.  (thank you!).

* Secondary Storage Facility – We have had such an overwhelming response for donated furniture that our 10 x 10 facility at Castaic Lake Storage will probably be filled by the end of this week.  We still have nearly 20 other pick-ups ready to be scheduled.  Is there anyone out there that has a storage facility available?  Extra space in a garage?  Part of a warehouse?  We estimate we will need this facility for 6 months, give or take a little.
This wonderful group of friends, colleages, musicians, strangers, and neighbors never cease to amaze us!  Your dedication & devotion to help this family heal are admirable beyond words.  From the bottom of our hearts, sincerest thanks to each and every one of you for the love & hope that you share.  Leslie Gilbride shared this story…"I heard that shortly after the fire, when Duncan was looking for items that may have survived, he found a CD in the drawer of a burned desk.  The CD was in perfect condition.  It was titled, "Where there is Love, there is Hope"…Isn’t that just the perfect message for all of us as we travel on this journey with the Ewarts?  Indeed it is.
Warmest Regards,
Josy and Steve Block
