Ewart Family Weekly Update

Here’s the latest weekly update on the Ewart Family.

In the early morning on Tuesday, December 20th, fire destroyed their Valencia home. Six family members were in the house at the time, three were seriously injured and sent to the Grossman Burn Center.  David and Michael Ewart were in the most serious condition. David was the final family member to be released from the Grossman Burn Center, weeks after the fire. Since the fire, our Valley has jumped in to assist as the Ewart’s recover.  This is the latest update courtesy of neighbors, Josy and Steve Block.

WOW!  This has been an action-packed week full of events to help the Ewart and Baker families with their financial needs.  DAVID and MICHAEL are continuing with their physical therapy and occupational therapy sessions.  David has been doing a much better job at wearing his torture-er-pressure suit.  We had the pleasure of seeing Hugh & Essie and they are doing well, too!  The whole family has an amazing spirit & energy about them and the very best of attitudes!
On Saturday, 3/18/06, we had the Via Escovar Garage Sale.  Our deepest thanks go out to Deborah Mann and Kathy Grimes who coordinated this extraordinary event!  These ladies literally drove all over town to pick-up, transport and store big-ticket items for this sale.  When I arrived around 8:00 am, the sale was in full-swing!  This was no ordinary garage sale.  The cul-de-sac was set-up like a Levitz Showroom – where furniture items were grouped together, such as a couch, table, lamp, etc.  There was someone selling donuts and Starbucks coffee to make the shopping experience all the more pleasurable!  Droves of people were fighting for parking spots – some double parking right there in the middle of the street!  LOL!  It was more than a garage sale – it was an "event"!!  Thank you to all the shoppers for your support!  Thanks to the Daily News for their front page cover story the next day!
Sunday, March 19th marked the First Annual Benefit Comedy Show at J.R.'s Comedy Club at Marie Callendars!  We had a great turnout and offered some wonderful raffle prizes!  There was a full slate of entertainers to keep us laughing throughout the night!  Many folks were complaining that their cheeks hurt from laughing so much!!!  We are so appreciative of the efforts of Randy Lubas of J.R.'s for offering this benefit – all the performers, including Randy, donated their time and 100% of the donations benefited the Ewart family.  Additionally, Marie Callendars donated $5 per person who ordered dinner off the menu!  Also, heartfelt thanks to Richard Varner for all the time & energy he invested to help make this event the success that it was!  Thank you for your generosity!!!   In addition to the great entertainment, we presented David with the first installment of his Scrapbook collections!  The scrapbook was compiled by many moms in the neighborhood and we were able to retrieve many photos from the various activities the kids were involved in.  This scrapbook contained pictures from school and sports.  We will keep you posted as more scrapbooks become available for presentations!
During our busy California weekend, Jacqui, Fred and the kids went to Tucson, AZ for a spring training game, hoping to see Jerry Owens play.  He got tickets for the family and met them at the game.  He also gave Michael a signed ball and bat from the White Sox team.  They were hoping to see him play on Sunday, but the game got rained out.  Michael was also running a fever which kept them from staying at the game too long.  It was a short, but meaningful visit.
Last night was the culmination of weeks upon weeks of planning and coordination for the Jay Leno Benefit Performance!!  We filled the Hart Auditorium (800 seats) and experienced an evening that will be remembered for years to come!  This was a classy event, with much attention paid to the tiniest of details.  Dave Berg was the Master of Ceremonies and he did a superb job with all the announcements – he skillfully spoke about the plight of the Ewarts and Bakers, but did not dwell on the negative.  Rather he spoke of hope and love.  One of the highlights of the evening (for me) was to meet Ryan Baker and his wonderful family.  The musical talents of David's friends left the audience wanting more!!  The "band" was phenomenal – if you like Jazz, you would have been in heaven – these guys were extraordinary performers!!  The violinists Bruce Dukov and Katia Popov were brilliant & exquisite – they performed a most-unique rendition of Stars & Stripes – of which you will probably never hear the likes of again!  Of course there was barely a dry eye in the house after Tim Baker and Leslie Garman sang "Press On" a heartwarming song of hope.  Hart High's Sound Vibes "wowed" the audience with their talents & showmanship!  When Jay Leno appeared on stage, the audience was primed and ready for laughs…and they were not disappointed!!   Jay touched on a variety of subjects that people can relate to, and showed us the humor in so many everyday things that we don't even think about.  He performed for nearly an hour and a half!  The programs for the event were developed by a Production Team that far exceeded anyone's expectations.  They were done with a glossy cover, foil stamping & glossy pages.  Thanks to Pat Waters and John Tenorio who were able to secure all the components for this program at no charge!!!  Since this is a benefit, the vendors were most cooperative in helping the cause.  There are so many wonderful, skilled, professional, friendly and efficient people that volunteered to help make this night special – we have sent thank you's to all who contributed their time to make this event the success it was.  You know who you are…THANK YOU!!!!  Now we will take a couple of days to resume some sort of normalcy before we jump into our next event!  We are removing the Hart High Auditorium Seating Chart from the wall, changing the message on the "Jay Leno Hotline" and wrapping up this event.  LOL!  Thanks again, Santa Clarita, and friends near & far for all your support in this event.  The Baker and Ewart families are humbled by your overwhelming support.
For those of you who missed the Vince Falzone CD Release Benefit, you will be delighted to see the video of the concert on the front page of the website:  In there, David played violin on 4 songs with Vince:  Mr. Alibi, At Ease, Norwegian Wood and I Saw Her Standing There.  Simply "click" on the song title on the left side of your screen…sit back…and enjoy!

Thanks to Zoe Vincent who pledged a percentage of her E-Bay sales to benefit the Ewarts.  We received her check and are very grateful for her kind & thoughtful contribution.
Update on the Storage Unit…Prior to the garage sale, David went with Deborah Mann to  visit the storage unit to inspect the items that were stored in there.  He discovered some items that he really could not use – and these items were removed from the storage unit & sold at the garage sale.  This freed up some space in the unit for items that folks have been holding to donate until we had a place to store it.  David and Deborah made their rounds and were able to pick up a lot of items that David really needs!  Now, the storage unit is filled (again), but everything inside is something he can use.  We are waiting for the second unit to be cleaned and could use some volunteers to help with this task – the unit is in Acton.  Please let us know if you can help with this.   Deborah Mann has very kindly offered to help with coordinating any future donations – if you are holding on to some big ticket items for donation to the Ewarts, you can contact Deborah at: .
Sunday, March 26, 2006 – David will be playing his violin at the Newhall Church of the Nazarene.  This will be his first solo since the fire.  Services are at 10:45.  The Newhall Church of the Nazarene is located at:  23857 The Old Road, Newhall, CA.

Next weekend (April 2nd, from 1:30pm to 4:30pm) is the Bopping Bowling Bonanza!  C'mon, bowlers, join in the fun.  We are hoping for 24 teams – we currently have 17 confirmed.  Anything over 17 teams will benefit the Ewart family, so we'd really like to fill the lanes!  Even if you are not a bowler, you can help by sponsoring a team!!  This is scheduled to take place at Valencia Lanes (23700 W. Lyons Avenue, Santa Clarita).  There are also some people that do not have a full team, so if you and a friend want to join the fun, we can help you put a team together!  If you or anyone would like to add stuff to their arts & crafts table for the kiddies, that would be great.  Remember, there will be a babysitter in case you are worried about your little ones.  For more information, please contact Sylvia Jacobowitz:  Thanks for your support!
Best Bite Pizza Fundraiser – just click on "flyers" at the website (, then "Best Bite".  Print out the flyer and bring it to Best Bite Pizza for a 10% donation to the Ewarts.  If you prefer to order in, Best Bit Pizza will deliver your food and give us 10% of your order as well.  Remember, you must present the flyer for the Ewarts to get the credit.
Sunday, April 30, 2006 – 7:00pm – "Go The Distance" Benefit Concert.  This concert will take place at the Performing Arts Center at the College of the Canyons, 26455 Rockwell Canyon, Santa Clarita.  Tickets are $25 and are available through the Valencia United Methodist Church and the Newhall Church of the Nazarene (call Leslie Garman at 645-8696).  Featured artists:  Steve Amerson, Kristine Hedwall, Randy Crenshaw, Steve Lively, Natalie Beck, Leslie Garman, Ann Moore, Steven Applegate and Morningstar.  If you can help us distribute posters flyers around town, please let us know.
Thank you for your continued support of the Ewarts!   You can expect your next update on Friday, April 7, 2006 (two weeks from now).  Of course, if something important comes up, we will send something out.  We are hoping that within the next week or so, we will add a "photos" link on the website so you can see pictures of some of the recent events that the community has been supporting.
