Ex-Deputy And Accomplice Face Prison For Drug Smuggling

A former Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy and a female co-conspirator pleaded not guilty today to charges they attempted to smuggle drugs into a county jail facility guarded by the deputy.

Peter Paul Felix, 25, and Monique Ciara Garcia, 21, were taken into custody today in Department 30 after pleading not guilty, said Deputy District Attorney Sean Hassett with the Justice System Integrity Division.

Felix, who resigned earlier from the Sheriff’s Department, is being held on $135,000 bail. Garcia is being held on $50,000 bail.

On Oct. 13, 2008, the two allegedly were caught attempting to smuggle 161.5 grams of heroin, 24.4 grams of methamphetamine and 51.5 grams of marijuana into the North County Correctional Facility where Felix worked as a guard. Garcia also allegedly had $5,100 in cash with her.

They are charged with one count each of conspiracy, one count each of sale or transportation to sell a controlled substance, two counts each of possession for sale of a controlled substance, two counts each of sale of a controlled substance, one count each of sale or transportation of marijuana and one count each of possession for sale of marijuana.

Hassett said Felix, who had been a sheriff’s deputy about two years, resigned shortly after Oct. 13. If convicted, each faces up to 12 years in state prison. Both return May 12 for prelim setting in Department 50.
