Today Cary and Bob spent the first half of the show urging listeners to understand that there is nothing useful about cigarettes, and that they are a major gateway drug along with alcohol and marijuana. There are still two reasons kids start smoking: peer pressure, and learned behavior from home. Cigarettes won’t get you high and smoking doesn’t look cool, and 440,000 people die a year from cigarettes. In the second half Cary and Bob explained the dangers of marijuana, such as short-term memory loss and lack of motivation. Also, the potency of marijuana is so much stronger now that it has ever been which adds to the trepidation of usage among young people. Lastly, the hosts touched on alcohol. Because drinking loosens the ability to reason, it makes it easy to experiment with other drugs while drunk, hence alcohol’s impact as a gateway drug.
