“We want to make some noise and want people to listen and know that the problem has not gone away and people are dying,” said Bob Sharits, an Addiction Specialist at Action Family Counseling. “Over 40,000 Americans in 2013 died from drug overdoses.”

The problem of drug overdoses in the Santa Clarita Valley is on the rise lately, requiring renewed attention from the community, according to Cary Quashen, Founder of Action Family Counseling and Sharits in the radio interview.

“At Henry Mayo, over 50 overdoses this year were treated successfully,” Quashen said. “There were three confirmed deaths in Santa Clarita as well as some unconfirmed. It’s the single most preventative death there is.”

Drug Overdose – Santa Clarita Drug Awareness

The leading cause of injury death in the United States has become drug overdoses, with around 52 percent of fatalities traced to prescription drugs, according to Quashen and Sharits. Many children have been getting into prescription drugs, ironically finding them in the safety of their own homes.

Action Family Counseling is seeking to make an impact for good in the lives of families by inviting those in the community to participate in the “Families in Action” program.

“Families in Action” airs every Monday from noon to 1 p.m. on KHTS AM-1220.

“If you are a parent and you have older kids you want support, it’s a great place to come,” Quashen said.
