Erik Martinez, 27, of Pacoima, was traveling northbound on the Interstate 5 freeway on Nov. 6 around 2:30 p.m. from San Fernando Road at an unknown speed, according to a California Highway Patrol news release. For unknown reasons, he veered to the right and onto the right shoulder where he collided with the metal guardrail.

Martinez was ejected off of his 2013 Honda 500 CDR and struck the dirt shoulder, according to the news release. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Medical Center where he succumbed to his Family Of Man Killed In I-5 Motorcycle Crash Asks For Help-injuries.

“He loved his bike,” said Yadira Martinez, wife of Erik Martinez. “He wanted to get a bigger bike and when he wasn’t riding his bike, he was looking at videos of bikes on Youtube.”

The Martinez family is now asking for help to raise money for a funeral for Erik Martinez.

“Everybody that I know is trying to help me as little as they can,” said Yadira Martinez, who works at a dentist office in Canyon Country. “There’s only so much they can put together for him.”

An account has been set up on the Giveforward website. The goal is to reach $3,000.

The couple married two years ago and would have been together for nine years this coming March.

The couple did not have any children but had three dogs, who were like their children, Yadira Martinez said.

“He was a very humble man, very sweet. He smiled all the time,” Yadira Martinez said. “He would always do anything for anybody. He was very giving and he had a big heart.”

“He always had a big smile on his face,” added Coral Briano, a cousin of Yadira Martinez.

The family hopes to have the funeral this weekend because the brother of Erik Martinez is in the military and only has so much leave, she said.

The autopsy for the body of Erik Martinez is pending, said Assistant Chief Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner’s Office.

“The police are still investigating,” Yadira Martinez said. “They don’t understand how the accident happened.  They don’t know whether to blame the bike or blame a health incident. They’re investigating everything.”

The collision is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

“If anybody could help,” Briano said, “that would be really good for my cousin.”
