Family Promise And Local Congregations Join To Address Homelessness

khts_givingbackWith their goal of giving hope to families without homes in mind, Family Promise of SCV has found yet another way to gather the community in order to provide for the homeless families in our valley.

Family Promise of SCV, who offers homeless families temporary housing, meals, and assistance with job searching, has joined 13 local congregations to act as host congregations together with nine support congregations to provide for the many families that are without homes.

The 13 host congregations have agreed to provide overnight lodging and food to homeless families for 1 week per quarter (four weeks out of the year). The nine supporting congregations will provide volunteers and additional resources. This makes a total of 22 diverse faith communites that will join together to support and provide for the struggling families in our community. The church’s involved can be seen in the graphic below.

“We are thrilled to witness the bridges being built across our faith community,” said Larry Comp, Family Promise Board President. “With close to an 80% effectiveness rate, this is really a “no-brainer” and we are getting close to the day we can welcome our first few homeless families.”

Local community members from several congregations initiated the creation of this Family Promise Chapter over a year and a half ago when they discovered that there were more than 850 homeless junior and senior high school students within the Hart District alone, according to a 2009 district study.

The issue may not be visibly obvious to all who live in Santa Clarita, but school teachers, congregation members, and even local officials can attest to the fact that there are hundreds of families in need.

“We are a community that makes families a priority.  But many of our local families and children are in need and that’s where Family Promise comes in,” said Laurie Ender, Mayor Pro Tem. “By bringing volunteers from throughout our entire valley together we can truly make a difference in the lives of so many people.”

There are 161 Family Promise affiliates around the country. In 2009, 76% of families were placed into permanent or transitional apartments/homes. Local Board Members are confident that Family Promise of SCV will have similar or greater success rates given such a caring community as Santa Clarita.

“With 22 congregations ready to jump in, we have no doubt that homeless families will soon be welcomed into a caring and helpful environment,” said Terry Comp, of Family Promise. “The powerful mix of compassionate people with proper resources is now in place to transform lives.”
