Family Promise Of SCV Presents Box City To Benefit Homeless

khts_givingbackIn 2009, the William S. Hart School District reported that more than 850 junior high and high school students in our valley were homeless, and the number is rising.

Family Promise of SCV is expecting hundreds to sleep in a cardboard box on September 26 as part of “Cardboard Box City,” an event to raise money and awareness for the cause of homelessness.

All funds raised will benefit Family Promise of SCV, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing homeless families with interim shelter and support services with the goal of transitioning the family into permanent housing. Family Promise provides comprehensive assistance for these families in a manner that offers hope, preserves dignity and promotes self-sufficiency.

The evening will include entertainment, a cardboard box decoration contest, games, live music, and other activities.

Participants of all ages and backgrounds will eat a modest homeless shelter style meal and a light breakfast will also be provided.

Family Promise is not alone in this effort. Participants from the SCV Emergency Winter Shelter, Single Mother’s Outreach, Lutheran Social Services, Help the Children, SCV Food Pantry, and Angel Food Ministries will help provide and serve the meal to Box City residents.

Terry Comp of Family Promises said, “It’s our hope that as Box City residents, we will have a chance to experience a bit of the feel of homelessness for that one night. While there’ll be no psychological stigma, we will likely be changed by the feel of the night air through the cardboard walls, and the wait to get a plate from our soup kitchen.”

Deadline for registration and pledges is September 13.
