Each night, a meal is provided at a congregation site to families provided by volunteers, officials said Tuesday.

Volunteers are placed on a list that can be called upon to provide dinner on occasion to families that are in the program, an official said.

“At any given time, there are between one and four families that we are hosting,” said Laurie Ender, president of Family Promise SCV.

“Having a list of volunteers who are willing to provide dinners on occasion for these families is a huge help and very welcome,” she said.

Family Promise works with dozens of local congregations that provide temporary overnight stays at their facilities.

The next day, vaFamily Promise Gearing Up For Fifth Annual Box City Eventns pick the families up from the congregations and provide them with breakfast.

Drivers take the kids to school, and the parents to work, if they have jobs, she said.

If the parents don’t have jobs, they are at the Resource Center in Canyon Country working on individual plans that will take them out of homelessness.

“Interaction with the families is the hallmark of this program,” Ender said. “It’s a simple and fulfilling gesture to help out these families.”

Family Promise has hundreds of volunteers and can never have too much help, Ender said.
