When something is passed down from one generation to the next it means that said item holds great value, and for the Slominski family that valuable item is a recipe.

The recipe has been passed down through the McLaren family for five generations, the name changed to Slominski because of a marriage, and now that prized recipe is being shared with the community.

McLarens Original Scottish Shortbread has been making mouths water from Scotland to America and for the last four years Tim and Andrea Slominski, with the help of their children, have been selling small batches of their prized shortbread.

The operation started in the family’s kitchen, but when the demand outpaced the houses ability they moved to an industrial kitchen.

Selling through word of mouth, a website and appearances at the College of the Canyons Farmers market, McLarens Scottish Shortbread has been sold coast to coast.

“Through our website we’ve sold to everywhere from Maine to Florida,” said Andrea Slominski.  “If I would have learned to optimize the items on the website we wouldn’t have been able to keep up with demand, we’re completely sold out.”

In addition to selling shortbread, the Slominski’s also make traditional British Lemon Curd, Old Fashion Ginger Cookies called Lassi’s, and jams.

They also sell scone mix, which is like a sweetened biscuit, but they don’t bake them because they need to be eaten the same day.

All of their products are made without additives or preservatives, and their jams are made only with fruits that are in season.

The Slominskis have also been active in helping give back to the community.

This year they donated shortbread to the Light the Night Walk, Circle of Hope and a number of breast cancer organizations.
