Farmers Market Keeps On Truckin’

Old_Town_Newhall_AssociationThe Main Street Farmers Market, a staple in Old Town Newhall for several years, plans to add a bit of extra flavor this Thursday.

How, exactly? Not only will Thursday’s platter include merging the monthly Art Walk, but nine food trucks will be parked on Main Street as well, cooking a variety of gourmet treats.

In teaming with the Rolling Bistros catering company, featured trucks include No Reservations, Shrimp Pimp, Greenz On Wheelz and Krazy BBQ.

“What we’re trying to do is broaden the awareness that we have a farmer’s market here every Thursday in Old Town Newhall,” said Suzie Szabo, manager of the Old Town Newhall Association. “We figured (the food trucks) are a pretty good way. We’d like people to see the efforts the City has put in with the new streetscapes. We’d like people to come down here and see how pretty it is and what we have to offer.”

Attendees will find the trucks on the east side of Main Street, between Market Street and 6th Street in front of the Canyon Theatre Guild and Repertory East Playhouse. The traditional farmers market will be directly across from the trucks, selling produce and homemade items such as breads, goat cheese and hummus.

“We’re all going to be pretty cozy,” said Szabo.

The OTNA hopes combining the farmers market, Art Walk and food truck vendors brings lasting attention to the area.

The Art Walk, which features the work of local artists inside and outside of Old Town stores, takes place every first Thursday.

“Artists will be on sidewalk and also inside merchant stores like the Pulchella Winery,” said Szabo. “Bobbi Jean at OutWest, of course she’s going to have a lot of things going on in there.”

Szabo’s right, as OutWest will showcase a striking palette of local artists and musicians. According to store owner Bobbi Jean Bell, those who wander into her boutique can witness the watercolor paintings of Cecily Willis, the glass artistry of Laila Asgari and the Western music of John Bergstrom.

“Regardless of what brought you downtown you’re going to find something that’s going to be of interest to you,” said Bell. “I think we all have the vision that this is the arts and entertainment part of the town and we’re looking to create more and more really fun programs to get folks to come down and experience this. What can be better than art and food and music and beautiful lights in the trees?”

Beginning February 3, the Main Street Farmers Market, Art Walk and Food Fest will take place every first Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
