Update, Tuesday 8:30 a.m.:

Details remain sparse. According to a report from the California Highway Patrol, on Monday at 5:30 p.m., an unidentified man was driving a 2008 Honda (unknown model) at an unknown rate of speed on Golden State Highway (aka The Old Road) just north of the Oak Flat Fire Station – which is approximately three miles north of the Templin Highway turnoff from Interstate 5.

The driver veered to the left and collided with a metal guardrail. His car overturned, sailed down a dirt embankment and burst into flames.

The fire engulfed the vehicle and consumed a few hundred square feet of the surrounding vegetation.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel.

The collision remains under investigation, and next of kin had not been notified as of the early morning hours.

The CHP report indicates the victim was the vehicle’s only occupant. Conditions at the time of the crash were described as sunny and warm.

Update, Tuesday 2 a.m.:

It appears a second person was in the vehicle. A CHP spokesman said the investigating officers were at “the hospital” and had not yet filed their report.

Original story, Monday 8 p.m.:

One person is dead as a result of a solo vehicle collision on The Old Road north of Templin Highway.

The crash was reported at 5:33 p.m.; California Highway Patrol investigators were still on scene at 8 p.m. when Officer Christian Cracraft said it was too early for details.

Information about the gender of the victim and type of vehicle was not yet available.

Cracraft said the vehicle went down an embankment. It wasn’t clear whether it came from Interstate 5 or from The Old Road.

The vehicle burst into flames as a result of the crash and sparked a brush fire, which appeared to have been contained by 8 p.m.

Further information will follow as it becomes available.
