Father’s Body Recovered From Lake Piru

Body recovered after 6 day, multiagency search effort.

The body of a Los Angeles
man who drowned August 25 trying to save his daughter was recovered Monday by
Piru Lake Rangers and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Dive Team.

Anatoly Smolyansky, 39, jumped into Lake
Piru during a pontoon boat outing
with his three children when his 5-year old daughter fell overboard. He never
resurfaced and the girl was pulled to safety by her 9-year old brother.

At approximately 11:30 a.m.,
park rangers and the sheriff’s dive team were working the Diablo Cove area when
they discovered Smolyansky’s body floating in the water.

The search for Smolyansky was a six-day multi-agency effort involving
10 government agencies and focused on the area of the lake called the “Narrows
and Diablo Cove.” In addition, more than 100 members of the Hatzolah
Organization of Los Angeles, a volunteer Orthodox Jewish rescue squad
participated in the search, both on land and in the water.
