Final Stage Of Cemex Battle: Help Congress Help You

Letter writing campaign underway.

We remember the old United States military recruitment signs with Uncle Sam pointing his finger, calling for support as America entered into one of its greatest challenges. And while our 10 year fight against the Cemex mega-mine may not have the same global intensity of Uncle Sam’s battles, it nonetheless involves every resident of the greater Santa Clarita Valley.

So it is with similar sentiment that the City is calling upon all residents to draft a letter in support of Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon’s new bill that will end Santa Clarita’s battle against the Cemex mine, currently proposed for Soledad Canyon Road.

The legislation involves a three way agreement between our City, Cemex and the city of Victorville. Under the accord Cemex would abandon their rights to mine the land at the edge of Santa Clarita. In exchange, they would be granted land in Victorville. This land could not be mined either, but Cemex could sell the land to the City of Victorville for profits equivalent to what they would have made from operating a mine in Santa Clarita. Victorville could then use the land to further advance their economic plans. Also a part of the deal bans mining on our Soledad property for good.

“This is a win-win-win,” Mayor Bob Kellar told KHTS, shortly after the legislation was announced in late April.

One final hurtle has yet to be cleared however; the Federal government still has to approve the land swap, since the property in Victorville will be coming from the Bureau of Land Management. This is why McKeon’s bill, HR 5887, must now be passed through Congress.

In order to garner support from his colleagues in the House of Representatives, McKeon must prove that all parties involved, including Santa Clarita residents, support the bill.

Our City has prepared several letters of support for organizations and individuals to download and fill out. These will be used in the coming weeks to aid McKeon and City staff in promoting the bill around Washington DC.

KHTS has provided these letters below, and we urge everyone to fill one out.
