Fire Crews Given Wind Reprieve

Santa Ana winds not expected until Friday

The gusty Santa Ana winds expected Tuesday afternoon will not arrive until Friday, causing fire officials to scale back extra staffing efforts.

“We’re not expecting anything significant until later in the week,” said Bonnie Bartling, specialist for the National Weather Service. “Winds aren’t expected to be more than 20 to 30 miles an hour Tuesday night into Wednesday, possibly getting stronger Friday night, with much colder temperatures.”

The change in the weather has prompted fire officials to put off additional staffing until the need arises.

“We’re working this on a day-to-day basis,” said L.A. County Fire spokesman Jason Hurd. “We will keep bulldozers and helicopters on standby, along with augmented staff and patrols, but not at the level initially expected.”
