Firefighters Prepping For Santa Ana Winds

Crews will be on call this weekend

In anticipation of forecasted Santa Ana winds, the Forest Service is reserving additional firefighting resources to respond to new fire starts. These resources include more than 111 engines, 14 air tankers, and 8 helitankers.

“By holding firefighters and aircraft in southern California through the weekend, I am confident we will be able to immediately respond to any new fire starts and we can ensure fires remain contained during the expected winds this weekend,” said Pacific Southwest Regional Director for Fire and Aviation Ed Hollenshead.

Crews have contained all but two of the fires on National Forest System lands in southern California. However, hot spots may still exist within the interior of the fires. Additional firefighters will be on hand to ensure the flames do not to spread outside of  containment lines. Experts predict Santa Ana winds will occur between late Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. Winds are not expected to be as strong, or last as long as last week’s winds.

In the Los Padres National Forest, some fire stations will be fully staffed 24 hours a day, as well as fire patrol units being on watch throughout the forest.  Additional fire engines from Colorado, Arizona, Oregon and New Mexico  A large helitanker will be stationed at the Forest Service Air Attack Base in Santa Maria, and a helicopter will be stationed at Chuchupate Ranger Station in the Frazier Park area. have also been deployed to locations throughout the forest.

Los Padres National Forest still has 15 fire engines along with 3 Hot Shot crews, 1 Air Attack aircraft, 2 helicopters, and 50 overhead personnel assisting with the Ranch Fire and other fires in  southern California.
