A rating change means big savings for residents in flood prone areas.
Homes near the Santa Clara River and tributaries will receive a 10 percent discount on new federal flood insurance policies written after the new rating goes into effect on October 1.
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) improved Santa Clarita’s scores from a 9 to an 8 in the NFIP Community Rating System (CRS). The change resulted in a 5 percent increase in discounts applied to flood insurance policies.
The NFIP’s CRS program ranks cities according to outreach conducted, and flood protection provided for residents in floodplains.
Since Santa Clarita’s inclusion to the CRS program in 2001, the city maintained a class 9 rating, giving community members a 5 percent reduction in federal flood insurance premiums.
This year, the NFIP improved Santa Clarita’s rating to class 8 after city staff submitted outreach and information gathering results on local efforts to protect flood plain residents from flood damage.
