Food Pantry Moves Beyond City Limits

Recognizing the vast size of the Santa Clarita Valley and the needs of those who require help in getting food on the table—but live on the valley’s outskirts—the SCV Food Pantry has launched a food distribution site for families and qualified senior citizens in the Castaic/Val Verde area.

Beginning March 1, 2007, the Food Pantry will distribute food to Castaic/Val Verde residents in need on the first Thursday of each month.  The food is distributed at the Castaic Sports Complex at 31230 Castaic Road in Castaic from 10 am to 11:30 am.

“The goal of the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry is to reach those in the SCV who qualify for our services to ensure that “no one in the Santa Clarita Valley should go to bed hungry.” says Executive Director Belinda Crawford . “To that end the new distribution site in the Castaic/Val Verde area is our second step toward reaching some of those families in the outlying areas of our valley.  We launched the same type of distribution in Acton at the beginning of last year and anticipate more of these programs to the other areas in the Santa Clarita Valley in the near future.

The SCV Food Pantry is seeking area residents’ help in spreading word to those who may benefit from the service, but are unaware of it because it is a new program.  To qualify for services, the potential client must meet the following guidelines:

Ø      Proof of residency in the Santa Clarita Valley

Ø      Proof of income not to exceed 150 percent of poverty level (Example:  Family of four no more than $2,500 per month.  Family of one no more than $1225 per month)

Ø      If there are children in the family, provide birth certificate or immunization record for each child.

“This is an excellent opportunity to expand the services of the Food Pantry and reach more of our neighbors who are in need” said Julee Putich, Senior Outreach and Mobile Distribution Coordinator.  “We give a big thanks to LA County Parks and Recreation for allowing us to use the Castaic Sports Complex for this monthly food distribution.”

The Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry was established in 1986 by a small group of community volunteers.  The Pantry uses donations from the community to provide supplemental food on a short-term basis to qualified local residents.  Volunteers work together to sort food, prepare bags, and assist clients. The commitment of the Food Pantry is that “no child in the Santa Clarita Valley should go to bed hungry.”
