Former CHP Sgt. Gets Jail Time

McDonald sentenced to 60 days for vehicle, stick altercation.

Former California Highway Patrol Sgt. Dwight McDonald was sentenced Monday after being convicted of four misdemeanor counts, including brandishing a weapon, reckless driving and assault with a deadly weapon after clashing with a jogger in Canyon Country in 2007.

McDonald will serve 60 days in jail, but was granted permission to serve his time in a private facility. He must pay a fine of $145 plus penalties and attend weekly court-ordered anger management sessions. He will also be on probation for three years.

In addition, the CHP is currently revoking his permit to carry a concealed weapon. The judge also imposed an order for McDonald to stay at least 100 feet away from his victim and not to have any contact with him whatsoever.

"I am happy with the outcome," said Deputy District Attorney Heather Borden, who prosecuted the case. "He was a respected member of the community who clearly has anger issues and I think the sentence is appropriate."

A restitution hearing is set for April 16, which will determine whether McDonald’s victim will receive any monetary compensation for his injuries.
