Former Mentryville Resident To Lead Free Tour Of Historic Site On Sunday

mentryville3History buffs will have a unique opportunity to walk the walk and talk about old times with a former resident of Mentryville at 10 a.m. Sunday morning, when Darryl Manzer leads a tour of the grounds and some of the structures included in the historic landmark on Pico Canyon Road.

Manzer, whose family lived in the house in the early ’60s, will talk about the old times – and do some “myth dispelling” along the way, as he shares his memories of Mentryville and Pico Canyon from the cottage to CSO #4 (The old well).

When Manzer’s family moved in, there was no electricity to the “Pico Cottage” – only power from gas lamps and power from a gas generator. The family spent months scraping soot and grease from the walls in an attempt to clean and paint. Eventually, the house was wired and, as Manzer wrote in a column for The Signal, the family could “iron and watch television at the same time.”

The Manzers worked to restore the home of oil pioneer Alexander Mentry to its former glory and played a major part in saving the building for historians of today to research and explore.

Participants are encouraged to wear long pants, comfortable shoes and bring water. The tour is free and open to the public. Mentryville is located at 27201 Pico Canyon Road in Newhall; park at the gate and walk in for the tour.
