Former Signal Editor Charles R. “Chuck” Cook died following complications from a stroke at Loma Linda Hospital on Sunday. He was 60 years old.
The Texas native has been described by his daughter Danielle as “the late great investigative journalist,” acquiring more than 100 awards for his work in exposing government and corporate misconduct. With over 30 years of journalism experience to his name, Cook was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize on three separate occasions while adding a list of newspapers to his resume, including the Dallas Morning News, Orange County Register, Los Angeles Herald-Examiner and Arizona Republic.
“He was a true journalist,” friend and former Signal employee Carol Chambers said. “He encouraged us to ask tough questions; The Signal was very hard-charging back then and Chuck was the impetus behind a lot of it.”
