November has begun, Daylight Savings Time is past and 2012 is almost over, but the City of Santa Clarita wants to remind residents of several events planned before the holiday season.

Sunday, November 11 is Veterans’ Day. A special ceremony will be held at the Veteran’s Historical Plaza in Old Town Newhall (at the intersection of Market Street and Walnut Street). The program will begin at 11 a.m. with a moment of silence, followed by the changing of the flags by the Knights of Columbus, Santa Clarita Assembly and representatives from various armed services recruiting offices, and ending with dedications and music.

The Santa Clarita Veteran’s Day Ceremony is free and open to everyone. All ages are encouraged to attend, as the City hopes to ensure that younger generations understand the true meaning of Veterans Day and the enormous sacrifices veterans have made to secure and defend the freedoms of the United States of America.

The City has also planned a free flu shot clinic this month at the College of the Canyons. On Friday November 16, 2012 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. COC’s east physical education gym building will be open offering shots to people 6 months and older.

“Flu vaccinations are a precautionary way for people to protect themselves during the flu season,” said Mayor Frank Ferry. “With the help of community partners like C.O.C. and the L.A. County Department ofPublic Health, Santa Clarita can provide inoculations against the flu free of charge for community members.”

Colleges of the Canyons nursing students administer most of the vaccinations and EMT students are part of the pre-screening process. Nurses from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the college and volunteer nurses will also be on hand to lend their knowledge and expertise with the flu immunization Point of Dispending. Numerous City staff, the City’s Community Emergency Response Team volunteers, as well as the City’s Emergency Communication Team volunteers will also participate.

Accommodations are available for individuals with mobility challenges and for the safety of others, animals are not permitted on campus (with the exception of service animals).
