Free Flu Shots Offered At COC, NEVHC Clinics

flushotWith flu season underway, several health care providers and community resources are teaming up to give free flu vaccines to residents in October and November.

The City of Santa Clarita and College of the Canyons are teaming up for a “walk through” flu vaccine clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, October 29 (until vaccine runs out).

People wishing to get their flu shots should enter the campus from Rockwell Canyon and park in Lots 5 and 6. The clinic will be conducted in the East P.E. Gym and is an interagency emergency exercise done in cooperation with the city, college, Los Angeles Department of Public Health and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. For information on this walk-through clinic, call 661 250-3708.

Northeast Valley Health Corporation (NEVHC) and Facey Medical Foundation have teamed up to provide free flu vaccines to the community. The cost of the vaccine has been underwritten by a grant from Facey, which will allow the free flu clinics to be held at various NEVHC health centers throughout the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys.

Immunizations will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis; each flu clinic is able to serve 400 patients per session. Patients are asked to bring their immunization record with them. The flu vaccine is recommended for anyone 6 months and older wishing to reduce their risk of contracting the influenza virus.

“By getting vaccinated, you can protect yourself from flu and may also avoid spreading flu to others,” said Debra Rosen , RN, MPH and NEVHC’s Director of Public Health, Health Education and Chronic Disease.  “Since the type of flu changes each year, flu vaccinations are good only for the season when you receive them.  It is best to get your flu shot early so you are fully immunized before the flu season begins.”

Flu clinics will be held:

  • Tues., Oct. 26, 4-8 p.m., Pacoima Health Center, 12756 Van Nuys Blvd., Pacoima, 818-896-0531

According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the seasonal flu vaccine protects against three influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season. The 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protect against 2009 H1N1, and two other influenza viruses (an H3N2 virus and an influenza B virus). The viruses in the vaccine change each year based on international surveillance and scientists’ estimations about which types and strains of viruses will circulate in a given year. About 2 weeks after vaccination, antibodies that provide protection against influenza virus infection develop in the body.
