Fundraiser To Help Refugees In Kenya

Local non-profit organization holds a fundraiser for a medical mission trip.

[view:node_ad=5] Helping Hands International Foundation (HHIF) will be presenting “An Evening In The Night Sky,” a dining, fashion, art, and dance fundraiser to provide assistance for “The displaced citizens of Kenya & Medical Missions” on Friday, December 5.

The event will take place at the Odyssey restaurant, and proceeds will go towards sending a team of doctors and nurses to set up a Trauma Center at the National Hospital in Kenya for refugees.

Debra Akello R.N., is a Kenya native, and moved to the United States 12 years ago. She has been living in the Santa Clarita Valley for the past six years, and formed HHIF after seeing the mayhem that happened with the election, when homes were burned and people were driven away from their towns.

Instead of “watching TV and feeling sad about it,” Akello decided to help out her fellow Kenyans by establishing HHIF, a non-profit organization to assist the displaced, sick and injured women and children.

“Our intention is to take a team of doctors and nurses to go to the villages where they don’t have medicine and hospitals, and set up clinics where people can go to be treated,” Akello said.

The next group heading to Kenya includes doctors and nurses from Henry Mayo hospital and Holy Cross Medical Center, and funds raised will go towards the cost of medical supplies essential to the traveling team.
