Gang Member Caught Up In Compliance Sweep

khts_crimeA 22-year old armed gang member tried to run from police during a routine parole compliance check on Wednesday, but a trip and fall put him right at deputies’ feet.

Deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s / City of Santa Clarita Community Interaction Team (CIT) were conducting the check at a residence in the 23900 block of Race Street.

As deputies surrounded the location, they spotted the gang member near the garage. When the suspect saw the deputy, he immediately attempted to run through the back yard, discarding his jacket, hat, and sunglasses.

The deputy called for help and that was when the suspect tripped and fell. As deputies arrived, he was immediately taken into custody without ever leaving the yard.

Deputies report that in the jacket the suspect dropped they recovered a loaded .32 caliber revolver. Also recovered were a methamphetamine pipe and a window punch, which are commonly used to commit burglaries.

The suspect, Newhall resident Juan Pedro Navarro, 22, was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on suspicion of felony possession of a loaded and concealed firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a loaded firearm by an active street gang member, and possession of live ammunition by a felon. He also faces potential misdemeanor charges of resisting or obstructing a peace officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of burglary tools.

He is being held without bail on a parole violation pending future court proceedings.

Deputies conduct these types of parole compliance checks several times a month in a proactive effort to keep all the residents in Santa Clarita safe.

During the operations deputies attempt to verify that the offenders identifying information on file is accurate, that they are properly registered, and they are complying with all the terms and conditions of their parole and applicable laws.
