Halloween can be an extra sweet holiday with all of the treats, but remember to keep them away from your pet.

“Chocolate can be extremely toxic to both dogs and cats, it’s the caffeine component of it that is so toxic,” said Jamie Ronchetto from Cinema Vet. “The darker the chocolate, the less amount that they would have to eat to have the really bad effects.”

“There are types of candies and sweets that say ‘low sugar’ or ‘sugar free’ that have xylitol in them,” said Ronchetto. “Xylitol can cause unsafe drops in blood sugar in dogs, and they can die from it.”

“Anything from the dinner table that are rich or fatty, even in small amounts, can cause gastrointestinal issues,” said Ronchetto.

If you do want to indulge your pet every once and a while, make sure they are designed to be ingested by animals and remember that they should be far and few between.

“Look at dog food, and if real meat is the first ingredient, or one of the first ingredients as opposed to corn or another filler, then you know that it is going to be a pretty good food or treat for them,” said Ronchetto.

Even if you are feeding your pet something that will help them, like Greenies, you have to keep in mind that those still contain calories.

“Everything in moderation,” said Ronchetto. “You need to read the bag, and know what nutritional contents are actually in that treat or food.”

Dr. Jaimie Ronchetto grew up in the Santa Clarita Valley and graduated from Cornell University Hospital for Animals.

Ronchetto owns and operates Cinema Veterinary, which is a full-service veterinary hospital with the aim of giving dogs, cats and pocket pets outstanding quality care in the areas of wellness, medicine and surgery, according to their website.
