Girl Scouts of all ages tell why they enjoy being a Scout

Santa Clarita area Girl Scouts were celebrated Wednesday morning at the “Commit To A Girl” annual breakfast at the Valencia Country Club. The event, a fundraiser for the council’s many projects, gave guests a chance to see how Girl Scouting has grown and changed, taking girls far past “just selling cookies.”

Gold Award recipient Megan Del Vecchio, a senior at Valencia High School, talked about the project that earned her the group’s highest honor: creating 211 puppets for children taken to the emergency room at Henry MayoNewhall Hospital.

The honor made Del Vecchio eligible for special scholarships and was part of the reason she attended Girls State, a leadership program sponsored by the American Legion. She also participated in the 2008 Rose Parade, carrying the Venezuelan flag along the parade route and being part of a pre-parade performance by “Up With People.”

“There is no community service effort ever too small or too big,” she said, adding that she is excited to move on to a new phase in her life – college. She plan to study medicine and receive her doctorate in research and continue the community commitment she experienced during her years as a Girl Scout.

Hart District Governing Board member Gloria Mercado-Fortine, a former Girl Scout, talked about how scouting helped her develop leadership qualities and how she stays in touch with several of the fellow scouts she got to know on camping trips and projects from several years ago.

Special honors went to female representatives of local first-responders, including Sgt. Gerri McCorkle of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Officer Michelle Esposito of the California Highway Patrol and Stephanie English, Public Information Officer for the Los Angeles County Fire Department, among others.

There are 3,500 girls involved in Girl Scouts in the Santa Clarita Valley and the meeting closed on an important topic – the need for donations of both money and time. For more information or to get involved, visit www.girlsfirst.org or call Irma Tamayo at the Joshua Tree Council at 296-8745.
